I Need To Start Titling These

Posted in Art, landscape, monotype, printmaking, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on June 30, 2010 by Toni Tiller

I always find naming art to be a little challenging, and these have proven the hardest yet. When I was working on the abstract subway pieces it was easy, things would just pop into my head, but these are too close to being representational for my mind to wander that way. I feel like they should be appropriately vague and artsy right? I better think of something soon because I am out in California and I just took about 500 new reference images to work from.

500 images.

I think I just scared myself.

Nevermind. Here’s the latest untitled piece. 8 x 10 monotype on fabric

Deconstruction Zone

Cube

A few blocks from my house the old Berkeley Deptartment of Health Building is being slowly demolished to make room for a BP funded Green Energy Institute. Take that as you will.

The slow, I-Beam by I-beam demolition has unroled over a month or two and has been fascinating to watch. There’s constantly a few people with cameras milling about it. Personally I’ve made 2 trips.

Dual

All the images are fun to look at but I don’t pretend to be an expert photographer, so I’m using them more as source and reference materials for digital collages. Most of these are very quick sketches worked up the last few nights in an hour or less, working out some ideas.

My Litter Box is Smarter than You

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , on June 27, 2010 by Jason Gray

Ok, maybe it’s just smarter than me. It works though; so far, so good! Except, I haven’t figured out yet how to turn my cats’ poo into blueberry icecream…

Sunday Sidealk Doodles: Dragon Bard

It really should have had horns. The rain came too soon this time.

I drew it and, with minor prodding, my pal Josh composed the verse.

This is what I did with my leftover paint yesterday.

In a random, irrelevant coincidence, I happen to be wearing pink and yellow underwear today. Oh how crazy.

Pazzles Superbun! (A Sketchy Portrait)

about 8 x 10 inches
collaged pazzle pieces a la JD and acrylic on matboard

I was delighted a few months back when Mr. Hastings sent me a package that included a stash of pazzle pieces, the likes of which we’ve seen in many of his works. I was even more delighted to find among the pieces several silhouettes of our favorite cottontail. Above is one of the collages I’ve made incorporating said lapin.

Whelp, time to hit the bunny trail. I may (or may not) return later with more sketchiness.

Back on the underground trains between Brooklyn and Manhattan. Ah, the scent of garbage and urine baking in the heat. Thank god there’s air conditioning in 95% of the cars. All ink on paper, 9″ x 6″.

Two Views

Posted in Art, landscape, monotype, printmaking, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on June 23, 2010 by Toni Tiller

It’s hot and I am distracted so that means I have started and forgotten to finish this blog post about 6 times now. I can’t seem to string together words without getting lost. I think I was going to say something about working two views of the same image, but I can’t remember so I’ll just post my images and get back to wallowing.

Public Pianos Project: Plunk Down, Plink Away!

Posted in Art on June 22, 2010 by probrucer

After wildly successful runs of “Play Me, I’m Yours” in London, Sydney, Sao Paulo, and Barcelona, artist Luke Jerram brought his vision–and 60 pianos–to the five boroughs on Monday, where they’ll stay through July 5.

Since the installation’s NYC debut coincided with the longest day of the year, I was able to make my way to the exhibit closest to my abode (Brooklyn Bridge Park) right before the last vestiges of daylight faded. I was worried that at 9:00, the piano would be locked for the night, or that nobody would be playing it. I needn’t have worried: as I approached, the newest keys to the city were held by a young Orthodox man as his sisters looked on (and CNN.com videotaped).

Waiting in the wings while he finished was this woman, who said she hadn’t played in quite a while and was reticent. After a little egging on by the assembled masses (including the bench’s previous occupant and this writer), she killed it!

Next up was this little cutie and her beaming mom.

Then it was mama’s turn. Holy cow, this lady was some kind of instructor or professional player. Amazing!

And lastly, this guy and his friends were strolling by and he decided to give it a go with a jazzy freestyle number before jumping up, shouting “your turn,” and running off.

“YOUR TURN!”

If you’re in NYC between now and the holiday weekend, I hope you’ll make a point of checking out one of the sites and participating in this project!

Fake Fake Album Covers

Fake Goth Album Covers

Posted in Art on June 22, 2010 by jdhastings

I grew up in the age before “Goth” split into subsects like Emo. Many of these probably fit under that heading now. Whatever. This exercise was to relive the hilariousness of that movement because for all its self-importance goths are really easy to imitate and, as I said, hilarious. Imagine finding these in overlarge plastic security vices in a Sam Goody in a mall somewhere selling for 18$ each while hair metal plays on the speakers.

KPAO! Menacing Adolescents Tamed Through Origami!

Posted in Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on June 19, 2010 by ssstephg

Ah heck, I dunno why but I don’t feel like posting more painting updates here right now–maybe later. This is something else I’ve been spending lots of time working on lately.  KPAO! (say it KAPOW!) stands for Kennedy Park Arts Outreach.  I made that up–so clever, huh?

Kennedy Park is just around the corner from my house.  It’s a popular hangout for kids, especially teens, many of whom don’t really have anywhere else to chill with their friends.  I go there sometimes, too.  I like to swing and climb on the play structures.  No, you’re never too old to play… well, not until your heart dies and shrivels up into a brittle stone, and I’m not that old yet.

So last fall right around election time there was a big fat controversy surrounding Kennedy Read more »

Good News and Bad News

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , on June 18, 2010 by Jason Gray

Bad News first: I just got home from work, and I don’t have anything really “new” to post this week. What’s worse is that it might be a slow couple of weeks ahead for me in terms of my contributions to Darteboard. However….

Good News: I got a big promotion at work, which means that I have a 9-5 schedule and weekends off, and therefore, time to start making stuff again. That job (Photography and Imaging Rights Manager at the St. Louis Art Museum) begins on the 28th.

Until then, enjoy this perfect-for-summer song:

Toni Tiller has been documenting her dreams in a well written blog . She’s agreed to allow me to attempt a series of interpretations of some chosen narratives. Here are some preliminary monotype studies. I’ll keep you updated.
