What do you Expect? A Baby?

More images of my  friend Lauren, who is about to give birth any moment now. I really think she’s going to be a great mother. She’s smart and tireless and focused and kind. Not to me, but I’m a PITA. Pain in the ass.

Here are some really loose monotypes, each about 18″ x 12″. I’m not satisfied with the emotion these prints are evoking at this point, so I’ll keep working.  I’ve been continuing with graphite and ink with color wash drawings, which you can check out after the jump.

Things Are A Little Nutty Right Now.

Posted in Art, monotype, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on March 31, 2010 by Toni Tiller

Big changes abound in the rabbit house. Two days of biblical rain, small floods, construction starting, babies threatening to be born any second now, my minor foray into art dealing, and of course the inevitable dinner party here and there. It doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for art, but last night I found a little time to play with my new press again. Here are new things I learned: you can soak the fabric and leave it smooth instead of wringing it out and it will give you a different printed texture, less, oh let’s say “batik-y”. Also, the more wet the fabric, the more it will pick up, however this also means you have to lay it over the plate correctly the first time or you get a big ol’ mess.

I have no religious background so I am not really sure why I chose a Jesus reference photo, but I did.

New Emoticons For The New Age

Yeah so I didn’t sleep well last night. And I get weird like that. These all depend greatly on the font used. I’m going to try to use the best fonts for each one. We’ll see if it works with the page-wide style sheets we use here.  I think they’re all going to be bold which messes some of them up.

    monsters
Here’s a fun little drawing of a group of monsters, drawn in ink pen and colored on the computer. I’ll probably paint in the original with acrylic washes. Its kind of nice to be able to play around with the color first on the computer screen first. For some reason I love using the halftone filter on the color.

    Hole New Beginnings

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , on March 27, 2010 by ssstephg

3 reference photos taken over this past fall and winter

My ideas are fickle bitches, preferring to come in overwhelming floods or not at all. Both scenarios can leave me in a state of art making paralysis. Oh me.

Sometimes when I feel too overwhelmed to choose an idea and take action on it right away I do at least write and sketch plans for possible future use. Lately, I’ve been remembering and even feeling a measure of excitement about some old, inactive ideas. Yesterday, I took some action, some small action, but action nonetheless. I broke out my scrolling saw and cut an irregular hole in a lovely 48 x 24 x 2 inch deep cradled panel*. Then I spent a good chunk of time sanding it’s edges. Not thrilling but there you have it. So as this progresses (assuming it does indeed progress) the paint, my mood and various other things will decide how much or how little the above photos actually influence the painting. I’m thinking I’ll try to post updates now and then since I know some of you are interested in seeing that sort of thing.

    *all measurements approximate

Today, in celebration of one of my favorite people ever, I have tentative plans to bake, ride my bike down to the place where I took two of the above photos and throw a bunch of cookies into the river. Hope you all have fun weekends planned, too!

    Surge and Destroy

Posted in Art, Jason Gray on March 25, 2010 by Jason Gray

A veritable Black Plague for all things electrical has swept through my apartment leaving a wide swath of destruction in its wake. So far, I have, for certain, lost two televisions, a home theater system, a VCR, and my new turntable. A new printer might become an addendum to that list. Yes, it sucks big time…

All photos Nikon D300 with Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G or Tokina 80-200mm f/2.8 AT-x Pro lens.

A friend is due any day now and I’ve been slapping paint and ink around trying to come up with a portrait. Haven’t succeeded yet but this is a small sketch in the gestation period.

    Trying Something New Again

Posted in Art, monotype, printmaking, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , on March 24, 2010 by Toni Tiller

Tom Bennett was nice enough to lend me a portable printing press so I can play around with making monotypes. My hope was that when I do it in the comfort of my own bedroom I will be less likely to drive myself nuts and so far that has proven to be true, the surprise in that is that it isn’t because of the location, but the choice of materials. For awhile I have been interested in the idea of printing on fabric, a decision based partly on curiosity but also partly on lack of appropriate paper. What I found right away is that fabric is far more selective about what it does and does not want to pick up from the plate so all of my usual fussiness is a huge waste of time. This is a good thing as far as I am concerned, it forced me to let go and make bolder strokes, simplify ideas, and just generally relax a little.

This is the very first one, and I am going to swear that I made a plumed duck on purpose.

And this one is loosely based on a landscape photo from a Facebook friend.

Oh and while I have you here, JD mentioned yesterday how the solution to his problem came in a dream, I can’t claim that exactly, but it seems a perfect opportunity to mention my side project. Feedback welcome on anything and everything, as usual.

    Glimpse into Process

Posted in Art, Painting with tags , , , on March 23, 2010 by jdhastings

Last night I tried to create a smaller version of the Red Flower piece I posted last week. If there are 2 ways to go about accomplishing a task:

A- detailed thought and preparation lead to the execution of the desired result or
B- making every mistake possible, sometimes repeatedly, until I have no other option but to do something correctly

I tend to accomplish things via route B. I try to go route A, but until you get your hands in something it can be difficult to visualize. Last night I made 2 separate mistakes that required me to undo an hour or more worth of work to fix then start over. At the end of the night I was pretty depressed about this, but I woke up today pissed, with the conviction that this stupid 8″ x 8″ proof of concept couldn’t beat me. And I’ll start rolling the boulder back up the hill today. I’m pretty sure I know exactly what I’m supposed to do now. In fact I dreamed about it in detail last night.

Here are some of my sketchbook diagrams for the original Red Flower piece:

The second one kept me occupied during a meeting at work. As of this morning I have an extra 5-6 pages of scribblings, but no scanner. You’ll see it some day…

    The Pinnacle of Western Art

Posted in Art with tags , , on March 23, 2010 by jdhastings

Its all downhill from here. The apex of Western civilization. Sad? Maybe, but they can be yours for only 199$, and they’re signed by Shaq himself!

As far as I can tell, Peter Max has taken a photograph of Shaq, painted all around him, and over his jersey, made prints of those simple exercises and is now having Shaq sign and dedicate them before mailing them out to people.

You want to know what a framed copy of this above your mantle will say to visitors?

    Idol

    wooden idol
Here is a peek of the wooden idols I’m working on. They’re acrylic on wood and all around 12 1/2″ tall.  I had three different designs cut and I’m close to being finished on all of them. I wanted them to be brightly colored, with lots of pattern and decoration and have a definite hand-painted look. I was loosely referencing Aztec, Indian, Asian, and Pacific northwest American Indian motifs with these and some other designs, I still plan on having cut out down the line.

I was out drawing on the walk the other day when my friend J came by and started flapping his jaws. I have no idea what he said but at one point when I stepped back he moved his big ol head so that it cast a shadow on the eyes I’d drawn and that cracked me up. It was pretty awesome.

    There’s Always Room for Polaroids

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , , , , , on March 18, 2010 by Jason Gray

My brother and Mandi at Cunetto’s.

What can I say, Polaroid is the Jello of camera gear; everyone loves them, they’re both easy to make, and they are both more fun than the alternatives. Over the years, I shot with two Polaroid cameras, a 600 and a Spectra, and it was always with the spirit of adventure that I took them into the street or around the house. I have read that Fuji will be producing “Polaroid” film in the wake of Polaroid stopping the manufacture of their own. It is news that excites me, because no matter how instant digital has made things, there is still something to watching the magic (or chemistry) of traditional photography unfold into an image right in front of your face that posting pictures on the computer can’t compete with. These shots are of old me and now me, old wife and now wife, Carbondale, Chicago and St. Louis. Enjoy, and sorry about the dust!

    A Fungal Monotype

Posted in abstract, Art, art on paper, monotype, printmaking, Tom Bennett, work on paper with tags , , , , , , , on March 17, 2010 by Tom Bennett

I accidentally left printmaking paper sitting in water for several days and on it formed various spherical shaped bacteria.
A slimy sea of cell shapes.
So I made an experimental monotype. I pulled the paper out and although it had essentially become just a bit more than sheet of skanky paste, I blotted it and used it to print this. I allow the moldy black marks to integrate with the ink and paint manipulations.
If this works out maybe I’ll replace the plexiglass sheet with a two week old cheese cake as a printing support.

    Feeling Nesty

Posted in Art, sculpture, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on March 17, 2010 by Toni Tiller

We’ve had a lot storms up on the New England coast this week, and that means fallen trees, snapped power lines, and no power for days on end in some parts. It also means my yard is full of fallen branches and the occasional dislodged bird’s nest, so my wandering mind made a connection and I decided to build one of my own. I’ve experimented with these materials before but I was just figuring them out without any real specific end goal in mind. This time I have a cohesive idea I am working toward, and a better understanding of the material. What I have learned so far is that it isn’t enough to just dump all the sticks in pile hoping they take shape because they just kind of fall over. So I took a look at some of the nests in my collection and tried to decipher how they work. What I have discovered is that you have to start with a loosely overlapping base and then take sticks of various lengths and thicknesses and then begin to weave them, creating tension between each piece. Each branch needs to be looked at and put in the right place, and the back of the structure needs to be feathered with a mix of leaves, grass clippings, and small sticks to bolster it’s overall solidity. It’s a time consuming process, gathering everything, looking at each piece, running back and forth to look at it’s shape as it grows, but honestly I can’t think of a better way to spend my spring mornings.

This is the very beginning, it’s about 30 feet long and 1 foot high here. It’s grown in height since then, but I am going to wait until I have a more dramatic advancement before posting the next update.

I also found a bunch of work based on similar inspiration from other artists – have a look after the jump.
