Facade

Posted in Art, Drawing, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , on February 16, 2010 by jdhastings

These 3 day weekends kill me. I always forget that Monday is Monday and I need to prep stuff to post for today, then it dawns on me halfway through Tuesday and have to get my act together…

Anyways, here’s another drawing from my 2003 trip to London. The image is of a house that had been completely demolished but for it’s face, which I assume was being preserved to retain its traditional style even as it was updated to current building standards. Something like that. It felt like a nice metaphor. Of what I’ll leave to you.

Lisa Selby

Posted in Art, Links, sculpture, Toni Tiller with tags , , , on February 15, 2010 by Toni Tiller

We all “met” Lisa in a particularly pedantic art group on Myspace that shall remain unnamed when she was creating lush and visceral paintings of herself and her friends. She has since moved on to pursue her MFA at Goldsmiths and is re-contextualizing  charity shop figurines, giving them the opportunity to become social commentators. I like them, and I think you should go to her website and have a look around.

acrylic on metal canvas aka hubcap

I just (finally) finished this piece for the Landfill Art Project. I’m pretty happy with it. It even ended up being related enough to my “Circular Obfuscation” series that I’ll probably post it on my website. I’ll include detail photos after the jump. All pics are enlargeable. Just click. Saturday Morning Cartoons: The Melvins Visit Pancake Mountain

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos, video with tags , , , on February 13, 2010 by ssstephg

Alright, it’s not a cartoon and the sound quality sucks harder than Punxatawny Phil, but it’s got a puppet, The Melvins (doing karaoke!) and a buncha little kids thrashing to The Melvins.  See now, I was right–even tots love these guys.

OK!!!

RIP Alexander McQueen

shoe from Alexander McQueen Spring 2010 R-T-W collection

I just read that Alexander McQueen killed himself yesterday, and I’m feeling pretty awful about it.  McQueen was one of the few fashion designers whose collections I really looked forward to every season. His work was inventive, theatrical and entertaining.  Apparently, he was distraught over the death of his mother a week earlier. Read more in an article here.

For those of you with an interest in his work, I’ll include a few links after the jump. Read more »

My Week

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , , , , , , , on February 12, 2010 by Jason Gray

“Non-Vanilla Ice (for Toni)”. Nikon D300 with Nikon 50mm f/1.8E Lens.

My week in photography was a pretty varied one.  My wife and I visited with her mother in Springfield, Illinois on Monday and Tuesday, I read books/essays on Edward Weston, Jeff Wall, and Garry Winogrand, I shot some new park pics in the snow, and I have almost finished my “Identity Project” photo series (that I’ve been working on since last August; two more to go!).  Sorry about the laundry list format of that, but I just thought that I would give some kind of insight into the random assortment of images that are about to follow….

From the Archives: A Dandy, a Stoner and a Nude

Posted in Art, art on paper, figurative, Illustration, monotype, nude, portrait, printmaking, Tom Bennett, work on paper with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 11, 2010 by Tom Bennett

I have completely mismanaged this past week and haven’t new work finished to post, so here are a few golden oldies from the last century. The first is a broad portrait of Charles Baudelaire I did as part of a series of sample editorial illustrations, as is the second: the author Aldous Huxley. The third is a piece inspired by the photography of Eadweard Muybridge.

But what I like even less it the fact that I haven’t posted any new art work in 3 weeks. So for better or worse here it is.

Bow Chicka Bow Wow

While in the woodshop last weekend, I framed this piece with a bright hooker red*. Somehow this has made the piece feel much more lustful to me. But I could just be weird.

*Hooker red has nothing whatsoever to do with Hooker’s Green.

Mini-Frames

Posted in Art, Painting with tags , , , , on February 9, 2010 by jdhastings

That’s what I call these miniature paintings. Why not miniature paintings? 2 reasons:

1) Saying the extra syllable wastes valuable energy and
2) From a practical standpoint, what distinguishes these from other small paintings is the frame.

Anyways, here are 4 I’m giving to the Firehouse North Gallery in berkeley to sell if they can. I have 4 more but prepping all the photos I took last night took 5 hours as it was, so I gave up at these 4.

Each is ~3.25″ x 3.25″, acrylic on canvas with Safety-Pins

C’Orque Board

Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , , on February 9, 2010 by jdhastings

This local art co-op I belong to recently asked if I would provide some of my art cards and mini-paintings for them to sell. Obviously I was happy to oblige but after delivering some of them, it became clear that the gallerey and prospective buyers would need a way to display them.

I’m still trying to find a cheap and effective way to attach a tab the cards can be hung by, but did manage to make a few cork boards for the gallery this weekend:

Pair w Cards

Each framed corkboard is 12″ x 12″

This allows the cards or mini-paintings to be hung without putting new holes in the wall all the time, as well as prividing some flexibility in the size of the pieces displayed, arrangement, etc.

I’ll explain the process of making them after the jump, with closer shots of the corkboards themselves. Read more »

first collage in a while

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee with tags , , , on February 8, 2010 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I haven’t had time to make any new collages lately.  So, this is the first one in a great while.  I think it turned out alright. I’ll need to make time for art for now on.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles: Noodlerina

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on February 7, 2010 by ssstephg

Friday was nice. I hauled the buckets of chalk out to the walk and pretty soon, a small crowd had gathered. I executed this drawing with some much appreciated guidance from my pal Mr. Brown. He suggested “noodle hair” and the ballerina body. The armpit hair, which I thought was brilliant idea, I happily added at 11 year old Jordan’s suggestion. Kids are pretty awesome.

Not the best pic, I know, but the sidewalk was still pink from the last drawing and there were patches of snow here and there. Whatever. I’m defying nature here. I think it’s easier to see if you click it for a larger view.

Oil on Canvas With Nails from Last Century: Sharps & Fragile Shells

Posted in Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on February 6, 2010 by ssstephg

oil on canvas with nails
22.5 x 27″

This one’s from about ’98 I think.  I painted it over an older painting–a self portrait.  So my head’s hidden under the egg there, and the title is “Egghead”.  OK, not really.  It’s not titled. Something I like about this painting is how the image kind of illustrates the life of the painting. The painting started off as one thing which I then destroyed to make something else in the same way the egg breaks to allow something new and more interesting to grow out of it.  That’s pretty much how paintings evolve for me.  I build them in layers that get covered up along the way in order that the end result is (hopefully) a more interesting whole.

*hmmmn, that pic’s a little blurry.   I’ll see if I can find a better one later to replace it.  Right now, I have to sign off and head to physical therapy.

Later,
-Steph

*EDIT: I found a better pic and switched it. This one’s much clearer and can be enlarged by clicking.
