A Couple Views of London circa 2003

Posted in Art, Drawing, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , on January 19, 2010 by jdhastings

I had a productive week, but once again nothing to show for it.  I considered rushing something yesterday, but that would be cheating us both.  Here’s a couple drawings I made from photos I took during a vacation in London 7 years ago.  Seven?  Wow.  I hate time.

Each of these are tiny, and they are something of a set.

The first is the British National Gallery, a public museum housing “over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900″ according to Wikipedia.

British National Gallery Final
4″ x 2″ graphite on paper

(I apologize for the corruption in the file on the viewer right side. I no longer have this piece at home and would re-image it if I could.)

The next drawing is of the building accross the street from the National Gallery.

Curved Building Final
3″ x 3″ Graphite on Paper

It got a little bit more shading.

After the jump, I’ll post some of the earlier stages these went through as I drew them. Read more »

I just recently learned that my friends mother is a painter and a print maker. I freely admit that most of the time a statement like that might be met with some inner skepticism on my part so I was really excited when I saw her work online and liked it as much as I do. Here’s a small sample but you can hop on over to DianaLevinson.com to see more.

Super Scientific Online Art Quiz Reveals The Mind’s Inner Workings!

Because everybody loves an online quiz!

We’re in transition here at d’Arte Board.  We’ve brought in professional marketing  jackholes to assess our audience’s desires.  After careful study and consideration we’ve decided to shift our focus to better accomodate what you all want.  Instead of continuing as a mere art related blog, the Board will soon expand to include an art related print tabloid.  In the meantime, I’ll work on developing MAd hEadLiNE sKilZ HerE.

Watch for us at your local supermarket checkout line!  And now, on to the quiz.  Below is my own masterful drawing along with the startling scientific test results.  Click the picture to take the test and gain amazing insight into your own warped psyche.

The Adirondacks Are Pretty This Time Of Year

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on January 16, 2010 by ssstephg

This is just a hole in the ice but it’s the kind of image that has more of an influence on my work.

You like photos? How about another post full of my random photos and sans any real art? In the mood for that? Good, cuz that’s what you’re getting today. I’ve been out of town for a bit. My friend and I went up to the Adirondacks to visit family and friends. Time was short and we only managed to squeeze in a fraction of the friends we’d planned on seeing but it was fun nonetheless. It’s winter in the ADKs, the kind of winter you see on postcards and in the movies, the “Winter Wonderland” kind of winter… winter with deep snow and fragrant pine trees and a fire in the wood stove, winter as it’s meant to be. Sooo, while we were up there, we went snowshoeing for the first time this year. We walked a trail at The Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Center and MAN! was it a gorgeous day in the woods! I shot a bunch of pics with my handy dandy new Kodak Zi8. Thanks Sean!

Transitions…

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , on January 15, 2010 by Jason Gray

Lately there have been/are happening a lot of transitions in my life; namely, I just turned 30, my workplace is significantly expanding, and I am getting ready to go back to school.  These photos represent some of the photographs that I have been taking to document these (hopefully) transcendences.  Enjoy.

All either Nikon N8008s or N6006 with either the Nikkor 35-135mm f/3.5-5.6D or 50mm f/1.8D lenses and Fuji Superia 400ISO Film.

Accidents Will Happen

And with the monotype process, it often does. And it did! The paper had been soaking too long: over night, and I had dried it out. Then a few days later I soaked the paper again, and somehow it had degraded to a point so when I pulled the print, it stuck to areas of the plate where the medium and been especially tacky. But I thought maybe it was salvageable in it’s serendipitous abstraction.  I thought I’d share my mess with you, like an audience member on Dr. Phil.

Sylvester Stallone Answers A Thought Experiment

Posted in Art, Painting with tags , , , , , , on January 12, 2010 by jdhastings

Yesterday I found this link about Sylvester Stallone “opening up” about his painting hobby on the excellent LA Times Culture Monster Blog.  The above is an example of his work.

Now here’s my thought experiment. What if you took an average teenager who had angsty teenage beliefs about painting, then gave them loads of money and free time to work on this art without exposure to the outside world. 40 years later, will they have developed into a worthwhile artist?

In Stallone’s case I think we can answer definitively, “Not really.” Analysis below. Read more »

Spectra

Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , on January 12, 2010 by jdhastings

I’ve been painting a lot recently trying to build an arsenal for a commission, the colors of which I am still debating. As a result, I’ve been casting a wider net so I could use actual art to visualize where I’m going with it. This is the result.

Composite

I think that’s 36 separate canvases making up the string. Ultimately, I will narrow the color field and paint a lot more smaller canvases to increase the texture and design range within the colors.

The above was photoshopped from these:

Arndale, originally uploaded by Peter Rea 13.

Pete’s a friend of ours from across the pond. I’ve always liked his approach to photographing urban environments, always aware of balance, light, and pattern in the things that so often go unnoticed everyday. Check out his work at peterrea.blogspot.com.

From Clay We Arise, Thus To Clay We Shall Return

Posted in Art with tags , , , , on January 11, 2010 by jdhastings

Art Clokey, the creator or Gumby, Pokey as well as Davey and his cheekily moralizing dog, Goliath, passed away last Friday.

This post at Boston.com eulogizes him better than I can.

I do want to reproduce this photo, though, because I think Mr. Clokey’s done a great job at recreating what William Shakespeare might look like at a 70s swinger/cocaine party. I couldn’t have done that.

I’m a great admirer of animation in general, and Clokey’s advances in claymation deserve respect and admiration.

…or, at least that is what I am hoping to have happen this year.  I might be a little scarce around D’ArteBoard trying to make that a reality, but I’ll try to at least contribute something entertaining every week.  Here is some randomness from my life over the past week:

M is for monotype

and for Michelangelo Merisi, the painter who was known as Caravaggio. His life, like his painting was big and brilliant and desperate. Filled with myth and mystery. I’m a big fan of his. Here are some studies I’ve done as homages.

Enjoy. Or if not,  have a scotch.

I almost forgot, I have 3 large pieces in an opening this Friday at the Kaleid Gallery in San Jose. It’s just a group show, but I would have liked to have gone. Unfortunately things didn’t work out that way, ah well maybe some other time, prolly silly to travel that far for a group show any way right? Right.*

*Even if it’s silly, I still wish I was there.
