From Clay We Arise, Thus To Clay We Shall Return
Art Clokey, the creator or Gumby, Pokey as well as Davey and his cheekily moralizing dog, Goliath, passed away last Friday.
This post at Boston.com eulogizes him better than I can.
I do want to reproduce this photo, though, because I think Mr. Clokey’s done a great job at recreating what William Shakespeare might look like at a 70s swinger/cocaine party. I couldn’t have done that.

I’m a great admirer of animation in general, and Clokey’s advances in claymation deserve respect and admiration.

Most guys with this sort of male pattern baldness that I know of around here have had the rest of their head made clean shaven. They seem to be also working on a tan to represent that they either they work in the sun all winter, or own a yacht in the Bahamas. I know they’re not Tibetan monks.
I had no idea who Gumby was developed by until now! I have seen some claymation done by an associate of Frank Zappa’s that was pretty psychedelic. That was done back in a time where that really meant more than just brightly-colored and goofilly-designed wallpaper.
