BOB ROSS!

Posted in Art, Drawing, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , on October 20, 2009 by jdhastings

If I could I’d make the title to this post sparkle and flash but alas, I can’t. So I’m left with just presenting this tribute as is:

Bob Ross FinaWEBl

I think this speaks for itself.

It’s alternative title is “Lionel Ritchie.”

Here’s the source drawing:

I’m going to post a self portrait shortly.

PS- thank you flickr for ceasing to suck.

So…. Flickr’s Not Working For Me

So I can’t post art. I can post this, however, which is kind of how I feel about the whole thing.

I’ll be back later with some weird art.

UPDATE: This disturbs me:

Jeff Youngblood Exhibit NYC: Reception Oct 26

Posted in Art, events, exhibits, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on October 20, 2009 by ssstephg

Missouri artist/gallerist and d’Arte Board friend Jeff Youngblood is exhibiting a fun new series of paintings at Spina Restaurant in the East Village.  Visually, the work is an exploration of bold blocks of layered pattern and texture rendered mostly in flat dimension, punctuated  occasionally by areas of thick drippy paint and found images.  There will be a reception with the artist Monday October 26 from 6 – 8 pm at Spina.   Partial proceeds from art sales will be donated to Mwangaza International, a charitable organization that helps to rescue and rehabilitate child soldiers who have been kidnapped and ravaged by the war in The Congo.  A good cause, free wine, hors d’ouevres, great art and fun people–it should be an awesome night!  Hope to see you there!

digital cat today

Posted in Art, Collage, Daniel Allyn Lee, digital on October 19, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

This piece is a few weeks old. I didn’t make any new collages this week. I think, it is a self portrait; I mean, it started of as one. I’m not sure what that means about me, but I do like cats.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles In S L O – M O

Slo-mo because it took me approximately ALLFREAKINGMORNING to post this! Thanks for such great service Verizon!!!

Not many doodles today and most of them got rained on which made them a little blurry before I had a chance to photograph them. But whatever, Autumn is “the most beautiful time of year” and “what a relief to have the air cool down” and it’s a “perfect time for hiking and maneuvering through corn mazes” and and all that. Nevermind that the weather is about as reliable as a bipolar teen on a cocktail of coke, acid and vodka.

The Uncanny Valley Explains My Urge To Kick Babies

Posted in Miscellaneous, science, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on October 17, 2009 by ssstephg

A friend of mine posted a link on Facebook to this article in Science Daily.  You know how representations of humans that look eerily human but still not quite right are a little disconcerting?  Well, the article is about how monkeys have the same issue with representations of monkeys that look eerily monkey-like but still not quite right.  Apparently, we’re both more comfortable with representations of our species that take conscious liberties than with those weirdly close but somehow off types.

Brief clip from the article:

The uncanny valley, a phrase coined by a Japanese researcher nearly three decades ago, describes that disquieting feeling that occurs when viewers look at representations designed to be as human-like as possible — whether computer animations or androids — but somehow fall short.

So yeah, there’s a scientific reason why I want to dropkick this disgusting little tyke…

This one’s ok by me though…

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Cardboard Animation

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos, video with tags , , , , , , on October 17, 2009 by ssstephg

Years ago when I was feeling a little defeated about my search for a house in the midst of the housing bubble, my friend Leo told me he’d build me a house out of corrugated cardboard.  Leo is a master at transforming cardboard into all manner of useful stuff, and I’m certain he could have built something spectacular and livable.  He said a cardboard house would prolly only last about 5 years in this New England weather and so in the end I opted for a more traditional abode.

This animation by Sjors Vervoort uses cardboard in a fairly straight-forward but effective manner.  I think Leo would approve.

October

Most mornings we sit outside on the front stoop and watch the neighborhood wake up.  We usually manage to drag ourselves outside between 7:30 and 8.  M pours himself a giant cup of coffee, I squeeze half a lemon into a mug of hot water and we head out to sip our respective beverages and let the sleepiness wear off.  This morning was no different.  As soon as we opened the door, our feline pal Stumpy, a sweet-natured stray who adopted us years ago, scampered up the steps to greet us with his usual one-eyed, bob-tailed enthusiasm.  He’s built like a wrestler–solid muscle, no neck, a tiny little butt–and he has the voice of a munchkin.  He hopped onto my lap and we watched the a.m. goings on.  Today was a really pretty fall morning–brisk but not too cold and the light was nice. So I took some photos to add to my expanding cache of reference-type images and stuff.

See the rest after the jump! There’s more than just pretty sky shots. Read more »

Bakers Project:Design! at STL Fashion Week, part one.

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , , on October 16, 2009 by Jason Gray

Last night, I shot my first round of images for STL Fashion Week, and cumulatively for me, it was ball of stress and anxiety that melted into a puddle of fun (somehow, that sounds more broadly suggestive than I meant it).  Anyway, the stress and anxiety was from not understanding where I was supposed to be at precisely the moment when I was supposed to be there, but I adapted.  In my case, this meant wandering around until I found the photographer’s area.  Once there, I discovered several others had beat me to the choicest real estate, so rather than try to shoot through or around them all night, I opted for over them when I discovered a bunch of chairs hidden behind a faux wall (yes, I stood all night on a chair of questionable construction, but at least I had sight lines).  continue–>

I’m continuing to push the b&w with a little color as underpainting and enjoying myself immensely. Thought? I’m not conscious of intellectual struggle here, thank god. It’s more of the physical and possibly metaphysical, abstract but not erudite. The actions, the constructions and destructions reveal the painting for good, bad or mediocre.

Baby’s On Fire

Dark Days

Posted in Art, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , , on October 13, 2009 by jdhastings

Literally. Apparently today marks the beginning of Monsoon Season in San Francisco.

I own both a rain coat and an umbrella, but when I walk, the excess water from both these implements stream directly down the front of my pants, soaking them in a manner shaped like a pair of leather chaps that stays damp for the rest of the day. Am I the problem here or were these rain implements just poorly designed? I’m from Los Angeles originally so dressing for the rain is to me a lot like foreigners trying to put on those water recycling suits in Dune. And I’m no Paul Atreides.

Whatever. Here’s some eerily apt art for today:

Final
“Dark Days” 23″ x 23″ acrylic on Canvas, with safety pins.

This continues my recent forays into mounting smaller framed paintings onto a common understructure (here, here, here and here).

For this piece I saved all the darker pieces I had accumulated and thought I might use them in a way that references some of Ad Reinhardt’s work. I don’t know if that comes through, but a starting point is only that and the intent was never to slavishly recreate his work.

When I constructed this over the weekend, I did choose the diagonal slanting composition of the different colors in part to reference rain, but had no idea this would cause a hurricane on the day I posted it. Maybe I should travel to Africa next. Or Los Angeles.

Anyways, detail shot after the jump.

St. Louis Fashion Week

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , on October 12, 2009 by Jason Gray

I have the opportunity and privilege to photograph at this year’s St. Louis Fashion Week. I just found out that I am going to be covering the runway for the “Baker’s Project:Design!” Event, hosted by Jillian Lewis of Project Runway fame, on wednesday night, and shooting backstage at saturday’s “Baker’s presents Surface” final night showcase. I will be volunteering for the production group that puts on Fashion Week here in St. Louis, so I have no idea where the images might turn up (hopefully, I’ll get to put a few up on here). It looks to be an exciting couple of nights for me!

For more information, and to purchase tickets to any of the showcases, go here.

happy Columbus day

I made this with Columbus in mind. Well, I planned to use an image of Columbus and then let the rest happen around it.  So, its kind of about the idea of Columbus, I guess. Anyway, happy Columbus day.

Headline: Struggling Museum Now Allowing Patrons To Touch Paintings

via The Onion of course :)

My favorite quote from the article:

“Sometimes you have to go that extra mile to grab people’s attention,” said Campbell, the Met director. “Sometimes it takes more than curating exhibits that bring meaning and context to our complex cultural heritage, more than preserving works of art that capture the spirit of transcendence unique to humankind.”

Continued Campbell: “Next year we’re going to let people grab any masterpiece they like and just take a shit on it.”

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles & When News Is Stranger Than Fiction

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on October 11, 2009 by ssstephg

My neighborhood has been in a small uproar recently over a strange article that appeared in the local paper, and I’m left fearing that my love of the playground may someday land my ass in the slammer.  At least drawing on the sidewalk is still acceptable… for now.  Here’s a peek at the happenings on the chez Bodalimatos walk this week.

A View From The Quagmire

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , on October 10, 2009 by ssstephg

on the Connecticut River

Not much has changed since my confession last week when I admitted to being stuck in a non-productive mode. I should add here that I’m not the type to sit around and wait for inspiration to hit. Relying on something else to move me into action feels like a pathetic cop out. However, I also refuse to waste paint on a massive scale, and I’m pretty good at recognizing when that’s starting to happen. So while I’m still not ready to jump back in and tackle the three new panels that are waiting patiently in my studio, I have continued to work slowly and mostly ineffectively on “the old six” and to get out and look at things and stuff.

One way I get out and look at things on nice days is to ride my bike out to a lovely little spot by the river where there are a bunch of fossilized dinosaur footprints.  When I remember to take my camera, I snap photos of various stuff that catches my eye.  I mentioned last week that I do this and that the photos function as source material for my work–not specific references, but they help inform my aesthetic in a more general way. Anyway, here’s some of the stuff I’ve been looking at. Please keep in mind I’m a mediocre to poor photographer.

Photo Version of a Sketchbook

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , on October 9, 2009 by Jason Gray

5A friend at the art museum got me thinking again about Harry Callahan, and the work that he did in terms of flattening out three-dimensional forms has been on my mind.  When I got home from work, I ran outside and snapped a couple pics as experimentation.  More like, these were tests on perspective, and a more finished product will come……eventually.

All Nikon D50 with 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Lens.
