I May Be Pathologically Nostalgic.

Posted in Art, art on paper, figurative, monotype, nude, printmaking, Tom Bennett with tags , , , , , , on September 9, 2009 by Tom Bennett

Making art is about conscious or unconscious remembrance of the past, specifically art past. That’s all well and good, but I have been vulnerable to the occasional attachment to my personal and family past, and I thought I’d confess that before I post this hand made unique print of a birthday suit. This monotype does not represent my nostalgia, at least overtly. It has some problems with form, and since I rarely if ever work back into a monotype with other mediums, I will take another swing at this later.

Another (Former) Resident Of Bed-Stuy

I’ve been taking pictures of dead animals for as long as I have been taking pictures, and I can’t say it’s deliberate, but when I see one I find myself inexplicably drawn with a mixture of compassion and connection leading the way. There is something about the idea that these little lives go largely unseen and in death they go unnoticed. I watched a half a dozen people pass by this rat without a glance and I guess that makes sense, why should anyone care about a dead rat? I don’t know, but for some reason I do. Anyway, enough babbling, here he is.

But Is It Art Yet? Digital Art, Redux

Posted in Art, news with tags , , on September 8, 2009 by jdhastings

The New York Times has story today about digital art, a subject close to our hearts here at d’Arte Board. Not just because some of us partake of the genre, but because in the World Artists Network from whence we sprang it was a running joke that every 3 weeks or so a lively debate on the merits of “Digital Art” would spontaneously develop.

The NY Times article isn’t as fun as you typical free for all internet argument, but it does touch on some of the main questions posed by the genre: How do you display it, how do you protect distribution, in what form do you sell it, etc. I recommend it.

I do not recommend getting into an online argument over the question of whether the entire genre is valid or not. Though we do have a comments section here, if you have any thoughts.

From the Archives: Summertime

Posted in abstract, Art, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , on September 8, 2009 by jdhastings

I have new art to post, but its in a style that more or less originated with this piece, so I thought I’d start here. Plus, September is generally the warmest time of the year in the Bay Area, so this piece is timely as well.

Summertime
“Summertime,” 14″ x 19″ Acrylic on Canvas with Safety Pins

The colors in this are based on some of the color schemes you encounter when you hike in the Berkeley Hills. The sun is warm enough and the rains far enough away that the colors start to get bleached out, with large fileds of yellow grass taking hold.

It also means that the grey, gloomy Bay Area approximation of winter is right around the corner, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Detail shot and explanation of the process after the jump.

Still, experimenting with ways of mixing illustration with collage.  Nothing too serious; just working through some ideas.

the following by MarkB, Sir Edwin and MarkB respectively:

It was a prolific week for sidewalk art on our sweet street. It was back to school for all the neighborhood kids and they were more than happy to step outside and play after long, grueling days of classwork.

Looks Like Hirst Better Watch His Ass

Posted in Art, news on September 5, 2009 by Toni Tiller

Remember this old story? Well it seems this kid is giving Hirst a run for his money at exploiting the media for self promotion with the kidnapping and ransom of a box of pencils. My favorite part is when the father gets arrested for “harboring” said pencils. At this point the whole thing has become so ridiculous that I wouldn’t be surprised of all of it was a stunt but I really don’t care because real or fabricated it’s still pretty hilarious.

These five paintings (last one after the jump) are all from the February ’07 series I told you about not too long ago.  It’s fun to look back through these and organize them into groupings.  I think these five work pretty well together.  They all have a similar linear  thing going on.

One more after the jump! Read more »

Dad Partied with Joe Cocker

When the storm came in at Woodstock. Anyway, I spent time this week down in old Baltimore with the rents and did some drawing with Harry. His concentration tightens and his energy accelerates when he draws, which doesn’t happen as much as it should, as far as I’m concerned. Here are Harry’s drawings:

Something Kinda Arty And What I Am Really Working On

Posted in Art, Photography, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on September 2, 2009 by Toni Tiller

I’ve got a little storehouse of images, but most of them need some work, this is just an un-photoshopped image. I liked the patterns and the addition of the New York Bagfish made me giggle, so this is what you get today.

But the truth is that lately I have been channeling all of my creative energy into my house. My kooky pack rat father spent years building up this monstrosity of junk and now I have to unravel it all in just a few weeks. This is our cottage, a building that would be a wonderful guest house if only it weren’t filled with all of this:

I am treating it as my current long term W.I.P. so more images will come as it develops. Whatta mess.

Back to the Archives: Scraps Woven with Pins

Once again my descriptive proclivities when it comes to titles precedes me. Where do you come up with such inspired names for your artwork, you ask, and I can only answer that it is from the hand of God himself.

After the jump I’ll include a detail and some explanation about, as Marvin Gaye might ask, what’s going on. Read more »
