Charity Case

Posted in abstract, Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , , on September 22, 2009 by jdhastings

Every year the place I work holds an auction to sell off crap people donate  to give to the United Way.  Auctioned materials range from wine, sports tickets, home made meals, etc.  I can’t afford to buy any of it, but other people seem to enjoy it.  I always mean to donate something, but by the time they announce the auction is coming its usually too late to start.

This year someone specifically asked me to make something though, so I made a note to have it by September.  So obviously I started prepping for it August 31.   Looking for something relatively quick, I found what components I already had and began the process I described in depth last week, wherein I looked at every possible combination of various small pieces in search of a suitable set.

So here is the final result:

I include a detail shot and a little more info after the jump.

History

I have a long history with the museum that I currently work at. It was a place in my youth where I went to revere the venerable, and it has been a place for me to become employed at two different junctures of my life. All of these images come from when I was employed there six years ago, and they were executed on small slips of paper (approx. 3″x5″) that I could slip into my pocket. Some are from artwork and some are fellow patrons.

Amazing!

Great what $150 buys! Incidently, Wire’s “Blessed State” (same time) makes a great soundtrack.

Cut the solipsism: Please soothe me nude painting

I’m out of town this week, in Kentucky, and have here this stage in a painting called “Five Points”. It was at one time something I considered like an abstracted landscape, but that notion drifted quickly into the ether. Do I need to explain more right now? No, I have the makings of a Woodford Preserve hangover. So i’ll forego the pretense.

I Went Topside For This One

It seems someone has finally taken an interest in the billboards on the G line and has replaced them all with shiny new ones that are of absolutely no use to me. So, while I wait for entropy to takes it’s course I decided to go back to the streets and see what I could find. This one was on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg, and I took several versions but I am going with this one for the moment, it’s an untitled Tracy Feith (whoever that is) Lou Reed mash up.

Decisions Decisions

When I was younger, every time I’d eat a bag of skittles, I’d find myself experimenting with every possible combination of the different flavors. 2 at a time, 3 at a time, up to eating one of each color. It was like an obssesive exercise in futility. I never did find an ideal combo, but had to attempt them nonetheless. And while I don’t eat skittles anymore, I do a similar dance whenever I am confronted with an ample salsa bar.

This comes out a lot in my art, too. I like to see all the options available to me. Not so much to find the perfect combo, but just to see more. As a result I’m drawn to processes that allow me to try different things.

But the cost can be prolonged bouts of indecision. How about an example:

Below the jump, I’ll post some of the combinations I came up with.

Wire Circle

Posted in Art on September 15, 2009 by jdhastings

I’ll have a longer post that’s going to take some time to craft later this afternoon, but here’s something to hold you over.

This is a quick test I did where I wrap my safety pinned scraps around wire that I can bend into various shapes. This method is on my to do list on things to explore further. But this is already a year and a half old, so…

I’ll be back later…

painted monsters

Posted in Art, craft, Daniel Allyn Lee, design, Drawing, Illustration, Painting with tags , , , , , on September 14, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I finally got those art doll monsters sewed together (well, most of them).  I took a quick snap of them. I used canvas covered buttons for the eyes.  I was thinking of doing some abstract soft sculpture in this same vein, but that idea has evolved into something more, that I don’t want to get into right now.

Last weekend, I was asked to draw a few sidewalk characters on the site of a block party that was being organized by a group of super cool locals who care about our fair city.  I dragged my cohort, MarkieB, and a few buckets of chalk with me and here’s what we did.

Prelude to Autumn in Wax: More Encaustic Bites

Technically, it’s still summer for what? Just over a week right? Yeah. Well, as true as that is, I’m just not feelin’ it. The past few days have been downright chilly here in Western Mass. Last night, I snuggled up under a down comforter to keep warm. Pedaling home from a bike ride the other day, I watched a smattering of bright yellow leaves fall to the ground. Crap! I’m not ready for autumn yet! Our extended cold, wet spring barely left time for any serious summer weather. I hardy even had time to complain about the blistering heat! Grrr… I’m angry.

However, in a conscious effort to be a more positive person, I’m attempting to quell my displeasure by concentrating on all the fabulous facets of fall. Lists are useful, right? (Nevermind the growing collection of undone To-Do Lists scattered randomly around my abode.) Let’s make a list!

New Art: A Gift From Mr. Brown!

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on September 12, 2009 by ssstephg

Remember a couple of weeks back when I posted that awesome colored pencil drawing given to me by my friend, WABU?  Well, WABU’s delightful younger brother, Mr. Brown, came over the other day to paint a Fimo sculpture that he’d made on a previous visit.  ‘Cept he never got around to painting the sculpture because while we were collecting the supplies from my studio to set up a painting station at the dining room table (current studio condition = chaos) Brown noticed a big ol’ piece of nice white matboard.  The lure of a flat painting surface was too much and plans were modified.

Brown didn’t title it but since he gave it to me I’m calling it “Sun Obscured By Sky”.

A Friday Photograph or Two

Well, I don’t really have much new art to share because 1. I have six rolls of film that I need to develop, and 2. the project that I am working on involves nudity, so showing progress shots is a bit out of the question. Anyway, I thought I’d share a couple of sort of art-ish pictures that I snapped recently. The one above is an outtake from a wedding that I shot last weekend, and features my wife, who always comes up with instinctively wonderful poses, even when I am just testing my lighting. The one after the jump is a b/w of a flower.

Both Nikon D300 with either the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 or the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 Lens attached.

Third Place in Contest!

Posted in Jason Gray, Photography, St. Louis with tags , on September 11, 2009 by Jason Gray

The exhibition for the Irv Schankman Memorial Photo Contest, titled, “St. Louis: Through the Lens”, opened tonight, and I was awarded Third Place for a photograph of my grandmother, Dorothy Bergmann. I am both extremely grateful and very excited about this recognition of my work. As for the rest of the awards, Honorable Mentions went to William Stage and Alex Pollitt, while First Place went to Amanda Pfister’s “Carondelet School XIV” and Second Place went to Andrew Raimist’s “Ando’s Ghost: Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts”.

At the reception, I was able to meet and speak to some really inspiring folk from the St. Louis art scene, some were artists and some were supporters. The exhibition will be available to view through December 5th at Gallery 210, and I hope that you’ll go out and see it!

From the printed brochure:
“The Irvin Schankman Memorial Photography Contest Exhibition includes 36 images by 19 photographers, selected from over 400 images submitted by contestants from throughout the region. Contest criteria stipulated that each entry be a photograph of St. Louis taken within the past fifty years, that the work reflect the essence of St. Louis, and that photo enhancement be minimal.

A blind jury process was used to select the 19 finalists and to award the three major prizes of $1000, $500 and $250. The jurors for the 2009 competition are Ellen Curlee, Director of the Ellen Curlee Gallery; Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, Director of the Sheldon Art Galleries; and Bob Little, President of Allied Photocolor Imaging Center.”

I will post some pictures soon!

First Thursday is on The Second Thursday This Month

Posted in Art with tags , , , on September 10, 2009 by jdhastings

What? I don’t know. I’m confused as well.

San Francisco’s monthly “First Thursday” art opening event was moved to the second Thursday of the month for September. Call it “Artistic License.” Anyways, I will be live tweeting my way through it if you’d like to virtually join me on the crawl (I get off work around 5:30 (pacific), so it’ll start sometime after then).

Or you could just send our Toni Tiller a happy birthday while she spends her night carousing. Either way.
