Another (Former) Resident Of Bed-Stuy
I’ve been taking pictures of dead animals for as long as I have been taking pictures, and I can’t say it’s deliberate, but when I see one I find myself inexplicably drawn with a mixture of compassion and connection leading the way. There is something about the idea that these little lives go largely unseen and in death they go unnoticed. I watched a half a dozen people pass by this rat without a glance and I guess that makes sense, why should anyone care about a dead rat? I don’t know, but for some reason I do. Anyway, enough babbling, here he is.

That’s odd- I’ve been doing the same thing for the past few years. My pictures aren’t nearly as good as this one, but I do it for the same reason. It seems a shame that humans ignore the deaths of fellow creatures. So I take a picture. I also find the many ways things can get squished fascinating. Here’s a link to a pic with my description of why I do it. (this is Mark’s sis btw)

although rats are my biggest phobia on the planet, and get a tense burning feel of panic when i see one in person, this is a striking photo. a perfect amout of red, and the rust on the bottom of the rail. well done!

I like the dead rat. I wish we were closer, so that we could go out on photo expeditions together.
