Steamy

Since I seem unable to make anything other than small, quick sketches lately, if even that, I will be posting another selection of smaller, quicker sketches throughout the day.

I think this one is pretty self explanatory. When I make wavy shapes, I cut them out of a single sheet, which ends up leaving a lot of wavy holes like you see here. Normally I just cut those waves out too, but decided to see what happens if you role with it here.

More later…

Life Imitating All The Wrong Art

Posted in Art, science with tags , , , , on August 3, 2009 by jdhastings

The Newscientist today brings us a photo of people wearing artificial leg type things, that are now being mass produced in Japan:

What’s wrong with that, you ask? Nothing in and of itself. These machines will be great for the disabled, and any number of other useful tasks. However, I have reason to believe that the product itself is just a ruse and a front hiding the radical agenda of a doomsday cult.

How can I say that?
A) The Company’s name is Cyberdyne, aka the company that invents the freaking Terminator computers and
B) They named this product HAL, as in the computer that killed all but one member of the Jupiter mission back in 2001.

Come on, people, they’re ADVERTISING their allegiance to the Robot Revolution here? Does nobody else care? Will we stare down the barrel of the gun they’re pointing at us and do nothing but call them cute??

Be afraid, people. Very afraid.

Also, this device will probably be used by perfectly healthy people and just make us all fatter and lazier.

cover

I’ve finished my second version of a cover for my Monsters zine. The first one was far too simple featuring only one sad monster, so I decided to beef it up a bit.

I think, I’m finally finished with the whole thing, other than some final proofreading and minor tweaking here and there. I should have a few copies made sometime this week. I already have plans for my second volume, which will utilize my preexisting character descriptions and some new sketches.

Basil Wolverton, a Rememberance

I grew up in love with Mad magazine and all and anything related to it. Basil Wolverton was long before my time but as a kid I remember my brothers and I had bubble gum stickers with portraits of hideously disturbing characters sporting pasta for hair and wart covered pickle-like tongues, with normal, wasp-sounding names like “Roger” and “Susan”. The Barbara Gladstone gallery in NY is honoring him with a show. I know I want to see it for screams and an upsetting stomach.
Heres a slide show from the NY Times

36Me and Leslie Hall from Leslie and the Lys (I picked her up in the lobby).

Last night was the opening for the Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show, and it was undoubtedly the most fun that I have ever had at one of my own art shows.  There were performances by Clownvis Presley, burlesque dancers (Lolla Van Ella, Michelle Minx), and Leslie and the Lys, plus, a ton of art.  The place was so jam-packed last night, that I’m going to have to go back today and really check everything out.   More pics after the jump.

All Nikon D50 with 50mm f/1.8D Lens attached.

Archive & Archived–From The Archive

Please excuse the dorky post title.

I made both of these paintings a few years back. Lately, I’ve been revisiting this series because it feels like I’m starting to bridge the gap between the work I’m doing now and this stuff. I’m pretty happy about that, and hopefully, it won’t be too long before I have something new to illustrate what I’m talking about.

In these works I’ve pared things down to what feels most essential to me–simplified composition, field of texture, one basic sculptural element and a mostly monochromatic palette I work up from multiple layers that get closer and closer to the final color as the work nears completion.

* Details of both paintings included after the jump! Read more »
