I worked on this damn painting on and off for over a year. It started out oriented upside-down from what you see here and actually evolved from a representational image. There’s another painting I worked on at the same time which began as the same representational image and so could be considered a companion piece of sorts. But, as I resolved the two paintings, they diverged into two sort of opposite paths. Instead of moving in the direction of abstraction, the second piece continued further into realism than I generally go. I’m still not entirely satisfied with the representational one, but there are certainly things about it that make me smile. Maybe I’ll post that one later.
Anyhow, back to this painting here. Like I say, it’s making was a long and laborious process. At times, it was alot like a wrestling match. I drop-kicked it. It clothes-lined me. I got pissed and slammed it over the head with a folding chair. While the ref was distracted, Ric Flair snuck in the ring and body slammed me. Vince McMahon turned a blind eye, and we both rolled around semi-conscious on the mat for a while. Right so, although both contestants sustained massive injuries, in the end, I think the match could be considered a draw–I’m ok, the painting’s ok, and we’ve since kissed and made up. Wait a sec, I just realized I’m not being very original here, am I? Oh well.
Well so, there’s actually a ton of paint on there which can be tough to see in photos. Check out the handful of detail shots to get a better sense of the surface. While some areas are relatively smooth and flat, others are thickthickthick and rough to the touch.
