New Art: A Gift From WABU! :)

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on August 23, 2009 by ssstephg

As I’ve mentioned, our fair weather sidewalk habits have had the unforeseen benefit of introducing us to some of the most entertaining young gentlemen I’ve met in a long damn time. One sparkling gem among these new friends and acquaintances is my pal WABU. WABU is kind, considerate, hilarious, adorable, Talented and Generous! Proof positive of those last two adjectives, I’m now the proud owner of an awesome original WABU drawing which was given to me by the artist earlier this week! It’s away being archivally framed at the moment but as soon as it’s back I’m going to hang it in a very prominent spot.  Check it out!

Thanks WABU!

happily,

Sister Silhouette: Again From The Archives

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , on August 22, 2009 by ssstephg

never officially titled but today I’m calling it “Sister Silhouette” which may or may not stick
48 x 36″ (aka 4 x 3 feet)
oil on panel

So this is the painting I mentioned earlier. It has existed in this state for a couple of years, but I dunno, I may work on it more at some point. Til then, I s’pose it will continue to molder, face to the wall, in the corner of my studio. Oh yeah, and it’s a self-portrait. Some of you may recognize those pretty pink and blue pills floating around the halo as Depakote and Wellbutrin respectively. If so, I feel for you. It ain’t no fun poppin’ pills when it’s this particular Rx. Or maybe it is–everyone’s different, right?

Silhouette: Another Painting From The Archives

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , on August 21, 2009 by ssstephg

“Silhouette”
48 x 36″
oil on panel

I worked on this damn painting on and off for over a year. It started out oriented upside-down from what you see here and actually evolved from a representational image. There’s another painting I worked on at the same time which began as the same representational image and so could be considered a companion piece of sorts. But, as I resolved the two paintings, they diverged into two sort of opposite paths. Instead of moving in the direction of abstraction, the second piece continued further into realism than I generally go. I’m still not entirely satisfied with the representational one, but there are certainly things about it that make me smile. Maybe I’ll post that one later.

Anyhow, back to this painting here. Like I say, it’s making was a long and laborious process. At times, it was alot like a wrestling match. I drop-kicked it. It clothes-lined me. I got pissed and slammed it over the head with a folding chair. While the ref was distracted, Ric Flair snuck in the ring and body slammed me. Vince McMahon turned a blind eye, and we both rolled around semi-conscious on the mat for a while. Right so, although both contestants sustained massive injuries, in the end, I think the match could be considered a draw–I’m ok, the painting’s ok, and we’ve since kissed and made up. Wait a sec, I just realized I’m not being very original here, am I?  Oh well.

Well so, there’s actually a ton of paint on there which can be tough to see in photos. Check out the handful of detail shots to get a better sense of the surface. While some areas are relatively smooth and flat, others are thickthickthick and rough to the touch.

Saturday Morning Cartoons: Les Moustaches

Posted in Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos, video with tags , , , , , on August 21, 2009 by ssstephg

I’m of the opinion that few men and possibly even fewer women (I’m lookin’ at you, Frida Kahlo) can pull off the “just a stache” look. So often, there’s something about that lone strip of fuzz that just just ain’t right. At it’s worst, a moustache is like a misplaced third eyebrow–all wrong. Today’s cartoons are in celebration of those rare individuals who wear the lip-strip well.

Taking a Break…

Posted in Jason Gray with tags , , on August 21, 2009 by Jason Gray

I have decided to take a little break from oil/acrylic painting.  I plan on concentrating on my two photo projects this fall, and might try to finish my first novel (about a third done right now) during the winter months.  I don’t know when I plan on returning to painting in the “grand medium”, hopefully after I have forgotten how to do it.  In the meantime, I might entertain myself with some ink and brush exercises like these…

From Jason’s Archives, Volume Seven: Early Work

“Meat”, Mixed Media on Paper, 18″ x 24″

Most of the pieces from this post are from my first ever gallery show at the, now defunct, 4Women Gallery in Chicago in 2001. I was excited about the attention, but I think that my work back then was too much about experimenting to find a statement (I was commonly using sawblades and sewing needles, among other things, as mark-making utensils), than it probably should of been for any serious gallery to take notice. Nonetheless, here are some of the pieces that I still have, all are works on paper. Enjoy.

But Is It Art? Feed Me, Seymour.

Photobucket

I need this in my neighborhood in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. It’s a newly discovered
Rat-eating plant.
What it does with the bones, I don’t know. Now if an obnoxious Donna Summer-playing neighbor-eating plant can be discovered, I’ll be set.

The Shark Pope, or Cardinal Fin

Again, I’m backed up so here’s an ancient collage I made from a challenge Daniel Allyn “Happy Cloud” Lee presented to the bloggers a few years ago. It’s a fun exercise to take elements chosen by a second party and build a formal and conceptual solution. This was just fun. And I think I had a dream like this when I was 10, after getting sunstroke .

Who’s Got Big Balls?

Posted in Art, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on August 19, 2009 by Toni Tiller

My neighbors do. I would really like to do a series on male nudes but I have a lack of willing sitters, so instead I have decided to document my local lawn art and this was the closest I could come to my originally desired theme. They have invested in these giant lovely balls that they roll around on their enormous lawn, I have no idea what they are made of, but they look heavy.

So, uh, now that I got that out of the way does anyone feel like sitting around naked and getting their picture taken? The only requirement is that you have a penis (balls optional). Thanks.

12 Circles

I hope I never do any more art pieces with 12 circles in it because then I’d have to come up with another name.

12 Circles.
“12 Circles” Collaged Acrylic on Canvas and Paper. I forget how big this is, but I think its 18″ wide. Its pretty big.

Washington Crossing the Delaware

Posted in Art with tags , , on August 18, 2009 by jdhastings

This is obviously the greatest piece I’ve ever made, if not the greatest piece of artwork in the history of man. If you disagree, you may count among the majority of mankind, but that doesn’t necessarily make you right. It was made from spare parts of previous paintings. I’ve also been told it looks like a volcano. I’ll let you know when the Louvre calls to hang it.

Nested Squares
“Nested Squares” 18″ x 18″ Acryclic on Paper, collaged.

This looks like that piece I did a month ago or so. Except its made of squares instead of that other shape. Yeah.

I’ll post another weird piece later and hopefully a third this evening.

unhealthy

I was planning on posting something I was working on yesterday but the project kept growing bigger into something that would definitely not be finished til next week. Instead here is a drawing I did last week. I was experimenting with colored pencils on top of an acrylic wash and ink. It turned out better than I expected, but I don’t think I will be using colored pencils for anything other than sketching for now on.

Well hello there. How’s your weekend going? I’m having a lovely time so far. In fact, it’s been a lovely week, ayep, just lovely. We spent plenty of time outside soaking up the sun and rain, sweating buckets and making the neighborhood a prettier place.

One more painting after the jump!

Back in February of ’07 I was feeling really beat down by the cold dark oppressive hell of another typical New England winter. What with the craptastic weather, my natural moodiness, and an un-winterized studio I was finding it nearly impossible to get any art made, and of course, the lack of art making just magnified my misery. By the end of January, things were sucking out too hard not to do something about it. Remarkably, in atypical Steph fashion, I made a plan! Read more »
