Birthday Present

Posted in Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , , on July 14, 2009 by jdhastings

This was a birthday present I made for my friend Aaron’s 33rd birthday.  It came out more effeminate than I intended, but if you knew Aaron, it’s more than apt.  I made this before I got the pazzles machine, everything cut by hand.  So barbaric.

My favorite part is the center piece, which is an ad from an old comic book where you can buy prints of your favorite celebrities, like Michael Landon, Barbara Streisand or Leonard Nimoy:

This is a little chaotic, admittedly, but I look at it being more “about” information than aesthetics. Most of the time when I’m making art I work from beginning to end on a piece trying to make all the parts harmonious, for a nice aethetic whole. But every so often i get fed up at that. It’s kind of delusional to me and not representative of the world, which is a loud mess of interweaving streams of information. When I get there, I enjoy making louder pieces like this, a mash up of leftover parts from my free art give away. The point isn’t to portray a unified vision, but to highlight the clash of the various streams of information that each decontextualized fragment represents. It’s not classically beautiful that way, but it appeals to me on a weird level.

Sketchy

Posted in Art, Collage, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , on July 14, 2009 by jdhastings

Today I’m going to do another round of shorter posts throughout the day featuring sketches- smaller, quicker pieces, jokes and/or experiments.  Most of these don’t even have titles.  I more or less let my scanner’s automated numbering system name them for me.

With that, I give you, “Sketch 341″

Sketch341

8″ x 12″ Acrylic on Canvas, collaged.

These shapes were cut by my Pazzles machine. They look like flowers, but technically you get this type of shape by drawing smaller circles around the diameter of a larger circle, then tracing over and under those circles to get this basic pattern.

That probably didn’t make sense. Anyways, I made them for a different piece I haven’t uploaded, that was much more orderly. This was how I used all the leftover parts, while embracing the less orderly form.

There is some glare in the image because of the gloss gel used as glue.

I’ll be back in a few hours with another.

In Britain, It’s “National Art Hate Week”

Posted in Art on July 13, 2009 by jdhastings

You can follow the movement here.

From their statement:

NATIONAL ART HATE WEEK is a call for direct action against the mass acceptance of art as a false economy for the smug manipulative elite and their ensuing grip of control over culture as a tool for mediated emotion, market lead non-critical homogeny, and boring popularism.

My favorite part of their manifesto, is “If a child offers you a painting during NATIONAL ART HATE WEEK you are to turn away in disgust.”

And then of course they call for propaganda to support their cause.

I think this is funny, but the artworld is dangerously close to hitting some sort of saturation point with irony, isn’t it? Hipsters already embraced a sort of meta-irony a while ago, if we break through the meta-meta-irony wall, I’m worried that reality itself could break down. Sincerity itself seems to have been left entirely to the patrons of “boring populism” that this group has been created to fight. Everyone else is being pressed to pick a side.

I’ll let each of you choose who you side with.

I opened a new etsy shop. I have so much older art just taking up storage space, I figured I might as well see if anyone wants it. Its nice that etsy lets you run two different shops and it doesn’t cost that much to list. I was going to try ebay, but I wasn’t very impressed with the art I saw there and I already have experience with etsy.
This shop will be filled with mostly art, but I was also considering making some decorative pillows. I made a few quilted pillows for gifts and I really like the way they turned out.  I also plan to get some custom printed fabric from spoonflower.com to make some pillow from.  Here are a few patterns I was considering.  I’m not sure which to try out first.

You know those annoying, indecipherable Captcha things that are supposed to prevent spam but never really do? Well someone made a game out of them, so now at least they’re good for something. Try your hand at protecting yourself from the Captcha invaders here.

(beyond fabulous) fish in a squirrel suit by Slightly Curious on etsy

(adorably sick) squirrel feltidermy by girl savage on etsy

or rather a real life version of either of these with the destructive little monster who refuses to stop tearing up my attic/roof line/soffit as a stand-in for these models. I could prolly also use one of these to hold back my hair while I get a bead on the vandal with my brand new squirrel shooter. Hopefully, my aim will prove better than than that of my pal Leo who one groggy AM managed to shoot out the window in his neighbor’s van in an attempt to gun down one of the degenerate squirrel thugs that plagues his hood. Any suggestions (no matter how absurd) for ridding my home of these invaders would be most appreciated.

With Gratitude,
-Steph

p.s. as a thank you for all the helpful replies I’m expecting to get, I’ll share with you all this wonderful recipe. click to read…

I really wish that I could go, but I unfortunately have to work. However, if you are in town, and near the riverfront, on Friday night, around 7:30p, and you have nothing else to do, why not go and see Sonic Youth for free? And then post some of the pictures for your Darteboard pal, Jason?

The Evolution Of A Painting

Posted in Art, Painting, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , on July 11, 2009 by ssstephg

Another older painting…

oil, pins and stuff on canvas
24 x 18 inches

Although I really like to see other people’s works in progress, I rarely do a good job documenting the evolution of my own stuff. I usually get too distracted by the working part to remember to take photos during the process. In this case however, I managed to get a handful of shots along the way. There’s a whopping five photos which sounds like a good amount until you consider it took me a couple of months to finish this painting. At any rate, I’ll include them (along with a few detail pics) after the jump so you can get an idea of how much a work changes while I’m making it. Read more »

But Is It Art? Crop Designs

Posted in Art with tags , , on July 10, 2009 by jdhastings

True to form, friend of the site Darya, (aka food blogger, Summer Tomato) recently sent me a link to this story about art infested Japanese Rice crops.

Photograph from karaponeyami.blog.so-net.ne.jp

Apparently, the farmers claim to have plotted out the field and planted diferent colored crops to achieve the effect. But I think we all know that they are just taking credit for the work of ALIENS!

Yes, Aliens, who as we all know can’t keep their grubby little hands off our pristine fields of grain:

And of course we know these are created by aliens, because they so consistently embody ideas that humans came up with!

So I say to the Japanese farmers, SHAME ON YOU! Give proper credit to the aliens before they become upset and enslave our race, making us toil for hours growing crops for them to draw on like some cheap inter-galactic art store. It’s not cool.

From Jason’s Archives, Volume Four: “The Allegory of Man”

“Jungle Madonna and Child”, Acrylic, Sand on Canvas, 24″ x 36″

At the time that I began the first sketches for this series, I was reading a lot of non-fiction about artists and a lot of text on Mythology/Theology. Naturally, I became interested in the process of heroization and exploitation, and these paintings became a testament to the elevation of some everyman situations to heroic proportions. There are elements of Greek/Roman Mythology, Judeo-Christian iconography, and the American media shimmer all rolled up in many of these. As far as the “look” of them, I was interested in finding an aesthetic that drew together Picasso, Stuart Davis, Ferdinand Leger, Matisse, Lichtenstein, and a few others. Many of these paintings were based on real people that I either knew or saw, while some of them came strictly from the literature that I was reading.

I’m revisiting the old but mild psycho-dramatic narrative. I have been aware, recently, of a mild personal and universal miasma as I walk through Times Square late in the evening.

Big Ass Update

craftShow2

Tonight was the meeting for all of the artists accepted into this year’s Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show, and it looks to be a great exhibition. I am also very excited for the special performance by Leslie and the Lys, as well as, for the inclusion of the Upcycle Exchange (see “directory of artist resources”). Here are a couple of videos from Leslie and the Lys, a performer that I have been following with excitement, for several years now (and don’t forget to come out and see the arts and crafts!) ->

I Almost Forgot Myself There

This is one of the most simple compositions I’ve worked with in this series, but one of the more complicated ones in my head, it’s based around several conversations I had over the week all connecting in one place. That is all I have to say about it for now.
