I Made A Crafty Trade

Posted in Art, craft, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , on July 22, 2009 by Toni Tiller

A little while back (too long really) our friend Scott, the proprietor of Bellevue Fine Art Printing made an exceptionally generous trade with me for printing one of my pieces. In return I gilded a dog skull with silver leaf that had belonged to him for a very long time, to me it seemed like a more than fair trade and in the end I am rather pleased with the results.

Scott’s company does great work and as an artist himself really understands the needs of the people he is working with, I encourage anyone who needs prints to have a consultation with him.

Oh and Scott, the dog’s in the mail.

Kung Fu Monkey Robot

Posted in Art, Drawing, J. D. Hastings with tags , , , , , , on July 21, 2009 by jdhastings

Since we’re in a science (fiction?) kind of mood today, I thought I’d share this diddy from the past with you.

This is from 5 years ago, and was drawn in reaction to 2 stories I read on Newscientist on the same day. The first was about a monkey that learned to control a robotic arm with its mind, while the second was about robots that could perform marital arts. The 2 felt like they needed to be combined into unholy matrimony, so I took the initiative. I keep thinking of drawing more but as usual, never get to it.

I even have t-shirts for sale if you want to impress all the hip nerds on your block. You know you want to.

Anniversary… of what?

Posted in Art with tags , , , on July 21, 2009 by jdhastings

As Jason pointed out yesterday it’s the 40th anniversary of the first Moon Landing… or the Greatest Hoax in the history of mankind.

Here’s a clip of Bart Sibrel interviewing Buzz Aldrin about the supposed controversy. Let’s see what he has to say.

(Yeah that’s has been around a while, but does it ever get old to see a 30 year old get taken down by a 70 year old?)

Here’s another video to try to set the record straight:

fabric and zine

Posted in craft, Daniel Allyn Lee, design with tags , , , , , , on July 20, 2009 by Daniel Allyn Lee

I’ve been working on some illustrations of monsters. I decided to put them together with some other stuff into a little monster themed zine thing. I’m hoping it will be funny and cute. Here’s one of the pages.

Also, an update on that fabric I ordered last week. It already arrived! Man that spoonflower.com is fast. The colors did shift a little bit but that’s kinda why I went with primary colors, anyway.

Not art, no, but it’s spectacularly beautiful.  Really, I’m not kidding.

SarahB, was this what you were talking about the other night?

Three Little Gifts

The three paintings below were Christmas gifts I made for my lovely friends Carol, Sarah and Christine. They’re kind of a set–both the paintings and the friends. This one’s made out of wax…

So I went to see the new Harry Potter movie last night because I’m one of those dorks who read all the books and totally got sucked into the story (shut up, it’s really good), and was delighted to discover there’s a new Hayao Miyazaki flick COMING SOON!!!  Watch the trailer for Ponyo here… due out in theaters August 14.

Here’s a clip from one of my favorite films ever, Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

Goebbels may ask, is it art? Golden Fascist Gnome

Irony again???
German authorities are asking if a nazi-saluting gnome on exhibit in Nuremberg is in violation of the law. I can see this in my backyard garden in Brooklyn as a flippant bronx cheer to my loud, authoritarian, merengue-playing neighbors.
The artist has been overtly disingenuous about the potential socio-political provocativeness.

Home Run Derby, 2009

Posted in Jason Gray, Photography with tags , , on July 17, 2009 by Jason Gray

0While I didn’t actually get tickets to go to the Derby, I was downtown shooting pics of the newly opened, Citygarden (an amazing, two, city-block long sculpture garden and recreation space that is in between an the existing one block-long promenade and a giant, one-block encompassing, Richard Serra sculpture), and walked over to outside the new Busch Stadium for some proximity to the excitement.  This new sculpture garden is incredible, and entirely surprising for where it is.  It is as beautiful and as well-modeled as Millennium Park in Chicago, and features a plethora more artists.  Check out my pics of the night on a separate blog that I set up for my St. Louis shots, so that I wouldn’t bore everyone to death here at Darteboard.  Or just double-click on the photo.

Today, I am the featured artist on STL Handmade (double-click the pic), which includes a short interview and some examples of my work.  The site’s moderator, Tammy Tutterow, is a tireless promoter and do-gooder for art in St. Louis, and I am honored that she choose to include me on her site.

“Crazy Taters, 75mph”

Last summer, I ended up shooting a lot of weddings that took me all over the place. My wife and I made roadtrips out of some of them, and to keep myself busy in the passenger seat, I started to take pictures out the window. The semi-trucks, with their natural abstract qualities derived from interspersed mechanical whatnots, became favorite targets. I started to set-up parameters; set the shutter speed to between 1/2500th and 1/8000th of a second, have Mandi speed up to 75mph and pass them, react to what I thought would be an interesting composition, and shoot. Amazingly, I ended up with a lot more good pictures than I could have anticipated. Here are some of them:

All Nikon D300 or D50 with Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 or 50mm f/1.8 lenses attached.

Old Nudes are better than no Nudes

Posted in Art, figurative, nude, oil painting with tags , , , , on July 16, 2009 by Tom Bennett

It’s 4:30 AM and I just got home from work. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ve been slacking off because I’m time-poor. My painting time has shriveled to nothing so I can put food in my mouth. This is an old oil painting I auctioned off for a charity organization. I can’t think. I’m going to bed.

If I Do This Can I Call Myself A Working Artist?

Posted in Art, Toni Tiller on July 15, 2009 by Toni Tiller

The Work Office describes itself as “a gesture to “make work” for visual and performing artists, writers, and others by giving them simple, idea-based assignments to explore, document, or improve life in New York”. Every Friday Night in July from 6-8 “Payday Parties” are held and artist’s who have completed and turned in work are paid ($23.50 – which is more money than I have ever made from art before), but like any other job you have to apply so good luck New Yorker’s, maybe I’ll see you at Payday.

New charges have been brought against the former art dealer

Lawrence Salander whose gallery, Salander Oreilly, on the upper east side, I would visit back in the day. I saw some great work there, from Delacroix to Elaine de Kooning.
Larry Salander is accused of bilking investors out of close to 100 million dollars.
