From Jason’s Archives, Volume Four: “The Allegory of Man”

“Jungle Madonna and Child”, Acrylic, Sand on Canvas, 24″ x 36″
At the time that I began the first sketches for this series, I was reading a lot of non-fiction about artists and a lot of text on Mythology/Theology. Naturally, I became interested in the process of heroization and exploitation, and these paintings became a testament to the elevation of some everyman situations to heroic proportions. There are elements of Greek/Roman Mythology, Judeo-Christian iconography, and the American media shimmer all rolled up in many of these. As far as the “look” of them, I was interested in finding an aesthetic that drew together Picasso, Stuart Davis, Ferdinand Leger, Matisse, Lichtenstein, and a few others. Many of these paintings were based on real people that I either knew or saw, while some of them came strictly from the literature that I was reading.
