  1. Somewhere in the 1960′s I figured out that Saturday morning cartoons were a component to weekend family management. Mom and dad would be sleeping in; wouldn’t even answer their door. As eldest it fell to me to be the arbiter of what sort of cartoon we should watch, to prevent rioting in the streets between my younger sister and brother. Actually, it wasn’t so tough. Things wouldn’t get rough until they had two more by 1970. Then unrest began to foment: “Why do we always have to watch Bugs Bunny?” I’d been given five years of accordian lessons by then and I was merely vigilant for the next time Bugs and Elmer Fudd would be doing that spoof on Rossini’s opera, The Barber of Seville”.

In the late 60′s, in about my 7th year of age, I too was a fan of Saturday morning cartoons. So much so, that one day when my mother was punishing me for some forgotten but no doubt deserved infraction, I informed her that I was going to run away from home. In her wisdom, she proceeded to pack me a suitcase that weighed at least half as much as me. On my way out the door I informed my mother that I would be back on Saturdays only to watch cartoons.
