Five Minus One Is Still

“Five Minus One Is Still”

Here’s another one from a while back. I worked on this one at the same time as and finished it shortly after the one I posted last week, makes sense, huh?  The color doesn’t translate the best in this photo, so I’m including a few detail photos to help convey a better idea of what it looks like in the flesh.  The plexi that’s placed behind the holes has a very slight greenish cast but it’s much more subtle than it appears in the image of the whole piece.  When I took the overall photo there was a warm light coming in the windows behind the painting.  The light caused the plexiglass to look more intensely greenish-yellow.

When I made this, I was thinking about how memory can be a way of filling absences, and how memories can change or shift over time depending on all sorts of things.  We have a tendency to idealize or demonize events, objects or people that exist only in the past.  Yep, that’s what I was thinking… that and some other stuff.

  1. I’m trying to come up with something to say about this work, but my linguistic center goes into power outage. I like the fact that it glows a bit. My reference to standing light refers being. It harkens back to fire, that whole “light at the end of a tunnel” bit, multiplied. I’m dealing with the layering of colors without being up close to understand the texture. Trying to intuit them. I’m one that would love a process video, a close up on a piece being created, time lapse or regular. There. Power’s back on.

  2. a process vid, hmmn… will see what i can come up with. thanks for the idea, Andrew! suggestions like that are always much appreciated.
