Update on my “Photo-Impressionism” Series
Posted in Jason Gray, Photography with tags abstract photography, digital, experimental, Jason Gray, Photography on May 22, 2009 by Jason GrayThis is an update to a series (part 1, part 2) of photographs that I have been working on since December of 2008. Though “Impressionism” may no longer be an appropriate term for this series, I’ll continue to use it to refer to my previous photos already described under this moniker. In any case, I am making some progress in building a mechanism to make taking these photos portable, and these latest few are testament to that progress. In the meantime, I have also failed over and over again in trying to align my means with my goal. Hope you enjoy these; please view them as stepping stones.
First Roll of Film from St. Louis
Posted in Jason Gray, Photography on May 22, 2009 by Jason GrayFinally got my first roll of film back, since I’ve been in St. Louis, and even though they are not all indicative of the city here, I thought that I would share some of the highlights. They were all shot with the Nikon N80, 50mm f/1.8D lens attached, on Kodak BW 400CN film.

So here is an older monotype from the winter of 2006-2007. I was thinking of the greek allegorical figure Persephone, the personification of fertility at the same time symbolizing the underworld. Classic Madonna/whore syndrome.

Considering this from one of our earliest posts it is a bit amusing, no?

I’ll be down in the subway this weekend and am eager to see what I get, but for now here is Echo.

Hastings, Painting, Safety-Pins on May 19, 2009 by jdhastingsI had hoped to have a new piece here today, and that piece is theoretically more finished than not, but it does need a few minor adjustments that would have been hard to accomplish along with photographing everything. Rather than rush through that I thought I’d post this old piece from 2006.

A New Take On An Old Idea
Posted in Art, Photography, portrait, Toni Tiller with tags Art, Photography, russell higgs, self-portrait, Toni Tiller on May 18, 2009 by Toni TillerWe’ve all seen those “a photo a day” projects where someone takes the same posed image of themselves everyday for whatever length of time, but here Russell Higgs adds a little something new to the mix by adding objects to his head. They are frequently things we all just have lying around the house, but his combinations and use of them often makes for surprisingly stylish results.

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags Art, chalk, doodles, Drawing, fun, sidewalk, steph gerolimatos on May 17, 2009 by ssstephgSo we’ve been playing with sidewalk chalk at my place this spring. We doodle on the walk in front of the house and leave the chalk out for passers-by to use if they feel like it. The chalk has only been stolen once. Most people just walk by, but a few people have drawn a little or left covert messages. One day, two of the little girls who live a couple of houses down actually spent quite a while covering our walk with cool drawings of things like clouds and sunshine, cool environmentally conscious phrases and messages about equality. That was pretty rad. Anyway, I decided the other day that it might be fun to start documenting some of these temporary images. Above is a doodle I made and below is one by my pal, Mark.
Hopefully, we’ll convince more people to join in. Stay tuned.

We Like Knitted Things
Posted in Art, Textile, Toni Tiller with tags Art, craft, knitting, Textile, Toni Tiller on May 17, 2009 by Toni TillerIt’s not my birthday, not even close, but if anyone felt like getting me a present I wouldn’t mind one of these demented knit objects by Patricia Waller. I mean really, who among us does not need a fully knitted buffet, a set if false teeth, or an unfortunate accident?

A Jack and Some Asses

“A Jack And Some Asses”
24 x 12 inches
acrylic and oil on panel
with red velour and foam
I have seven paintings in the works right now but none of them are quite in a state where I want to show photos yet (aside from the detail shots I posted so long ago). So instead I’m posting this older painting because it’s related pretty directly to the ones I’m working on now. I’m never quite sure how clearly the photos translate what’s actually going on in the work. This piece is on a cradled panel just under two inches deep. The circular forms at the top are holes I cut through the panel. The red is a soft, fuzzy velour fabric I placed behind the holes, and behind the velour is a thick, squishy layer of foam. I think it’s fun to stick a finger through the hole and press the soft, red squishable circles. Usually when I show work like this, kids are the first to run up and touch it. Adults tend to be hesitant even after I tell them it’s a-ok to touch. Go figure.

Saturday Morning Cartoon
Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags cartoon, Childrin R Skary, creepy, funny, Katy Towell, steph gerolimatos on May 16, 2009 by ssstephgI wish I’d posted this on Valentine’s Day.
I found Katy Towell’s YouTube channel a while back and just rediscovered it this morning. Her creepy little cartoons are entertaining as hell! I think she has eight cartoons available for viewing on YouTube. Some are short and sweetly weird, and some are longer and more elaborately weird. They’re all just as dark as the Cupid episode above. Also, I just discovered she also has a website — Childrin R Skary. Watch another of her short and funny vids after the jump. Read more »

I’ll give you a hint, keep the jellyfish away from the sharks, then start swapping words, oh and there are multiple endings too. It’s called Today I Die.

Happy Birthday, Harry
Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, oil painting, Painting, Tom Bennett with tags Art, birthday, harry bennett, Painting, riversea gallery, Tom Bennett on May 15, 2009 by Tom BennettToday is my father Harry Bennett’s birthday. He is 90 years old. Born in Lewisboro, NY, to Anna Karlsson Bennett, a swedish immigrant who had recently been widowed, he was raised in Ridgefield, Ct and went on to serve in the south Pacific during World War ll. He studied art in chicago and worked as a painter and illustrator back in Connecticut where he raised 5 children as a freelancer. I lived and breathed his studio and wanted to be him. He is a wonderful, patient, loving man with a brilliant sense of both design and direct power with the plastic medium.

I understand the difficulty in responding. We don’t have the time or patience. It’s not your fault.
This is an unfinished oil painting on enamel-primed masonite with turps and black oil. It’s part of the series of distorted nudes I’ve been doing. The influences here are André Kertész and Harry Bennett. As I was working I realized how much the treatment of the figure, the distortions and the markings had the imprimatura of my father.
Again, if you wish to comment, I’ll look away for a second to give you privacy.
