From the Archives: Blue Concentric Rings

I had hoped to have a new piece here today, and that piece is theoretically more finished than not, but it does need a few minor adjustments that would have been hard to accomplish along with photographing everything.  Rather than rush through that I thought I’d post this old piece from 2006.

Blue Concentric Rings

26″ x 26″ x 5″, 6 layers of Acrylic on Canvas with Safety Pins

More info and a detail after the jump.

So this is 6 layers of the same blue scraps piled atop one another with the center pulled open to reveal each lower layer. Hopefully it’s recognizable in the photo. The effect is something like an amphitheater shape, where the outer layers are a couple inches above the lowest part. Hopefully the detail makes it clearer:

Blue rings

The original impetus was to use the same method I used in Holes to create something like a ripple of water. Clearly, the rings here aren’t perfectly circular, so the effect is more suggested than achieved, but I was happy with the end result. Of everything I’ve made, though, this may benefit the most from being seen in person.

Next week I promise I’ll have a piece ready to post that was made on commission from somebody who said this was their favorite piece (this piece sold a few years ago).

This one is one of my all time favs from you, and I think that it was probably one of the first pieces of yours that I saw. It was also the first time that I thought of Kandinsky in relationship to your color studies (failed parallel drawn there). Great job, again, and I can’t wait to see the new one!

  3. Sacre Merde Man! FIVE inches deep?! Wow. I didn’t remember this one was that sculptural. I love it even more knowing that.

  4. Kinetic chiascuro! Lots of pop!
Now I’m curious about how it sits on the wall with all the weight.

    • Hastings’ army of brawny-armed female assistants work in shifts holding it in place. he made a killing on the sale so the ladies are generously compensated for their time and muscle. You know that “Pazzles Paper Cutter” he keeps talking about? She’s not actually a machine at all, an inspiration, a muse maybe, but of the flesh and blood variety–big, buff Patti Pazzles.

      • Nice tutorial! Couldn’t understand a word of it though on account of the accent…which is weird, because I can speak Glascowegian like a real Weegee! Australian, not so well.
I want pictures of said army or it didn’t happen.

This reminds me of the interdimensional pothole I almost fell into one time I was tripping on mushrooms. I wrote multiple letters to the city about it, telling them they really need to get that thing filled in, but these beuraucracies—no one seems to care—-even when facing the prospect of strange-matter entities using it to enter our world and enslave us.

  6. [...] As promised, this is a new piece I made for a friend who had stated that he liked this piece. He may have been referring to the color, but I went ahead and referenced the form instead. I had [...]
