Wintertime Art

Byzantine Winter
oil on panel and canvas with foam-backed red-orange velour behind openings
42 x 24 x 2+ inches

Ah man, it’s been cold again. We’ve had too much rain and the temps have been down in the fifties! Bleh. So that means crap light, crap mood and not much productivity. In keeping with the cold, the above is a painting a I did during the winter months. It’s similar to the last one I posted in that it incorporates the same basic elements–a highly textured surface, a limited palette and openings in the canvas backed with brightly colored fuzzy fabric. Unlike the last painting, the holes in this one go right through the panel and the fabric is backed with a squishy foam and pressed up tight to the panel so that it bulges out a bit. Kids really dig this one. When it’s hung, the openings are at a perfect height for small hands to reach.

Synesthetic Book Review

Posted in Art, news with tags , , , on May 29, 2009 by jdhastings

The Newscientist has a book review for Wednesday is Indigo Blue: Discovering the brain of synaesthesia by Richard E. Cytowic and David M. Eagleman, Published by MIT Press. As you might have intuited from the title, it is a book about Synesthesia, its causes, history and some of the authors’ theories about it. The Newscientist sums it up, “This is a clear, clever book that will appeal to synaesthetes in search of explanations, and to all with a passion for neurology’s wild territory.”

Here is my own review of the work: Light grey, with a bit of alizarin crimson.

Big Ass Indie Art and Craft Show

Posted in art fair, Jason Gray, St. Louis on May 29, 2009 by Jason Gray

flyer

I just found out that I was approved to participate in the above event.  Double-click on the pic for more info. The Mad Art Gallery is one of the most unique concepts (a former police station, with some exhibitions held in former jail cells) in art galleries around St. Louis. I’m looking forward to it, and, if you are in St. Louis at the end of July/beginning of August, you should drop by and see me!

Old Man Take a Look at My Life

I made a monotype for my father on his 90th birthday celebration.

It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.

Today I Need

Coffee… and all things caffeinated. It’s just one of those wan, lackluster days where I can muster the energy for nothing more than sucking down coffee and browsing the interwebs. Ohyeah. So far, I’ve found a number of items which would make this experience far more pleasant/fun/bearable.

The White House Wants New Art

Posted in Art, news with tags , on May 27, 2009 by jdhastings

‘Berkeley No. 52.’ by Richard Diebenkorn

The Wall Street Journalreports today that the Obamas have decided to bring Change to the White House wall decorations.  Eschewing the tradition of paintings of white dudes painted by other white dudes, they are seeking to truly modernize the displays with notable works from the last century as well as increasing the representation of minority and female artists.

The result sounds like the type of place I’d like to visit, featuring works by Jasper Johns, Glenn Ligon and Josef Albers among others. Mostly lent to the family by enthusiastic collectors willing to share. It must be nice to have enough clout to convince other people to lend you their priceless art to hang on your walls.

“Thanks For Killing My Little Pony.”

Posted in Art, events, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 27, 2009 by ssstephg

Untitled by Bjorn Copeland

So there was this one time when this little girl’s brother decimated, by means of hanging and drowning, her entire stable of My Little Ponies.  The post title is a partial quote from her apparently understated but slightly menacing reaction.

If the concept of a slew of modified My Little Ponies appeals to you, you may want to head over to Champion Coffee, 1108 Manhattan Avenue, Greenpoint, Brooklyn where there’s currently an exhibit of the altered equines.  Participating artists are all local pals of Talitha Whidbee, cafe owner and show curator.  The show ponies are being auctioned via ebay to benefit Just Food, a non-profit organization that works to develop a just and sustainable food system in the New York City region.   There’s a Pony Party scheduled for this Friday May 29 from 7 – 10pm.  Bidding ends at 9pm, an hour before party end.

Read more details at Brooklyn Based, the organization with whom Whidbee partnered to transform the Equine event into a charity benefit.

We’re Safe…For The Moment

I took the new camera out for a spin in the subway and I have to say I couldn’t be happier, it’s lighter, sharper, and somehow more intuitive (I should still probably read the manual at some point though) than the last one. Here is one of my first subway shots, comments, crits, vented spleens and etcetera are all welcome.

I get to see The Right Now, later…

I just won tickets to see one of Chicago’s funkiest musical offerings when they play here in St. Louis, this Friday night!  J.D., this is a show that I think you would have a lot of fun at, given that disc full of Motown that you sent me a few years back.  The radio station,

kdhxradio,

is just steps from my front door, and it is one of the only truly independent (no college association and community ran) radio stations in the country.  Here is a link back to their Myspace page, where you can view an excellent video that they recorded (back when they were the Eli Jones Band) in studio at KDHX.

Rectangular Target

As promised, this is a new piece I made for a friend who had stated that he liked this piece. He may have been referring to the color, but I went ahead and referenced the form instead. I had been meaning to make one with differing colors since I finished the blue one, this just gave me the excuse.

Sunday Sidewalk Doodles

Posted in Art, Miscellaneous, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on May 24, 2009 by ssstephg

We had minimal luck again this week getting anyone to actually draw. We ended up with just a couple of little doodles and yards of of so-and-so loves so-and- so in nearly legible scribbles. So here are a couple more doodles by me (above), Mark, a young gentleman (and then altered by Mark), and two young ladies from the neighborhood.

Four more photos after the jump.

Summertime Art

Nine Years And The End Of Summer
42 x 24 inches
acrylic and oil on 2 inch cradled panel with red velour beneath ripped canvas

Lately, it’s been sunny and beautiful and I’ve been painting outside. It’s nice to spend time outdoors, and paint dries a hell of alot faster outside on a hot day than inside a hot cramped studio. The painting above is from August, 2006. It spent most of it’s time as a WIP outside lying on the grass in 90 degree heat.
