Links Du Lapin #16

It’s no great secret that I am borderline mentally impaired when it comes to math. I try, I swear I do, but as soon as someone tries to explain something to me my brain comes over with the equivalent of white static on a TV set. It just happens to be a coincidence that today is Square Root Day just as someone was valiantly trying to explain to me last night how they work and what they are for. I am sure they are very useful, but I am also sure I hope to never need to know why.

Theodor (“Ted”) Seuss Geisel

March 2, 1904 – September 24, 1991

official Seuss website

Who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss?  Don’t bother raising your hand if the answer is you.  Just walk away now.  I don’t eat mammals, but I love me some “Green Eggs And Ham”!  My sister Sam and I used to read that book over and over again and giggle nonstop.  What a classic.  Actually, as much as we loved that one, my personal favorite was “And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street”.

As it turns out, Seuss was born in my neck of the woods–Springfield, Massachusetts–which is pretty nifty.  There even are a couple of places around here where I’ve been lucky enough to see some original Seuss artwork.  The fabulous Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, MA featured many original Seuss ilustrations in one of their very first exhibitions.  Michelson’s Gallery in Northampton, MA has a wonderful display of Seuss art which includes not just 2-d work, but also some exquisite sculptures.  And of course, there’s the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden at The Springfield Museum.
So a big fat Happy 105th Birthday to one of the greatest artists and children’s book authors ever!  Thank you Dr. Seuss for filling my childhood with so much fun and for teaching me to appreciate the absurd when I was a wee tiny tot!  And thanks Mom for introducing me to one of the most influential authors and artists of my life.
