The Model & The Artist (a vid by William Wegman)

Much could be said about the complex and varied relationship between artist and model, but I’d rather just watch this vid and giggle.

I Don’t Have Any Art Today

Posted in Art, art on paper, Food, Miscellaneous, sculpture, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , , , on March 25, 2009 by Toni Tiller

I know I could post something from the archives, but I don’t want to go that way today so instead I’m going to take a page from the Happy Cloud playbook and post a bunch of links. A Links Du Lapin smorgasbord if you will. I’m going to start with something forwarded to me by my friend Lisa, she and I both love horses and when I was little I had about a million My Little Ponies, but none of them were are cool as these. After that you can go and make your own stop motion video with your webcam, or if you have some free time try out samorost, there’s a sequel to that game but I haven’t gotten through the first part yet so I’m waiting. Oh, and speaking of games, I have no idea how this works but somehow this woman is using game scripts to make cool art. I should probably do something productive today and write an artist’s statement but I am probably just going to sit around and fantasize about making bacon cups instead. Now before I go, here’s 100 girls and 100 octopuses, you know, just for the hell of it.

Archives: Red, White and Dark

Sorry I’ve been incommmunicado this last week but I’ve had to deal with some unfortunate family issues. I will be back with more of my in depth ramblings sometime soon, hopefully.

This is a piece from 2005 or 2006, when the whole pin weave method was new to me and I was experimenting with getting designs within the chaotic arrangement of the scraps.

This link combines my love of several things, art, subways, irreverence, and outlaw parties. Improv Everywhere is a group dedicated to causing “scenes of chaos and joy in public places”, and they decided to have a gallery opening in the 23rd street subway. Check it out.

An art collective I belonged to years ago, Blueprint, did something similar about 15 years ago, but instead of treating what was there as art we went down and hung our own. It took about a month of planning, measuring out and allocating billboard spaces to about 25 artists, who then had the rest of the month to make something according to size. Then on the appointed date we swarmed the station with a bucket of wheat paste and a makeshift bar. I can’t say any of the art hung was particularly good or groundbreaking, but we had a hell of a time. Considering the strict vandalism laws it was surprising only one person got arrested and they had to work really hard to get that to happen. I guess if you strip off all your clothes, wrap yourself in paper and paste and then roll around on the hood of a police car eventually they have to give in and arrest you.

word

I was going through this box of old drawings the other day, getting rid of some things, making room for new drawings.   I came across this folder full of word art pieces I made back in art school.  I came across the same bunch of drawings a couple years ago and was inspired to try some word art collages.
Here’s one of them:
Strength for Other People
Strength for Other People, paper collage, 23″ x 16″, 2007
These pieces were made using found phrases from forum discussions on myspace.

This time, I kept the folder out of the box.  I think I’ll try some more of these; I have some interesting, new ideas.

I mentioned in my last post how much I dig Ashley Bryan‘s picture books. Well along with making beautiful art, Mr. Bryan seems like a really cool guy. Here’s a link to a video interview, and the transcript for those of you with slow connections. Enjoy!

At The Carle

Posted in book arts, museum, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , on March 20, 2009 by ssstephg

I mentioned the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art yesterday in my post about The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 40th anniversary. I’m sure many of you know that The Caterpillar book was just one of many, many wonderful children’s books by Mr. Carle. Other hits include but are not limited to “The Grouchy Ladybug”, “The Mixed Up Chameleon”, “Pancakes, Pancakes”, “Papa Please Get The Moon For Me”, “The Very Busy Spider”, “The Very Quiet Cricket”, “Draw Me A Star”… I could go on and on, and I’m tempted to, but I don’t really want to drive you away. Suffice it to say, Eric is an impressively prolific artist and picture book illustrator and writer. He clearly loves what he does, and if the sheer size of his professional portfolio isn’t enough to convince you of that, perhaps a visit to the museum that bears his name would do the trick.

The Carle represents the physical manifestation of Eric’s longtime dream to elevate the public perception of picture book art to the level of high art. Something you may not know about the museum is that in Read more »

Well, it has been nearly a week since I posted my intention to delete all of my internet accounts in favor of a more holistic approach to networking and associating with my friends and peers; since then, I have deleted my Etsy account, one of my ulterior Myspace accounts, my Linked-In Profile, and both of my Photobucket accounts. I also switched some of my information concerning business stuff over to my business email, in preparation for deleting my personal email address soon. On Facebook, I sent out a message to some of my friends, ones who I only have information for through that site, requesting their addresses. I will be deleting my Facebook account on next Tuesday.
So far, the ground beneath my feet has not opened up, and I have not been swallowed into Read more »

Happy Caterpillar Day!

Posted in Art, book arts, Collage, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , on March 20, 2009 by ssstephg

Time to celebrate all things green and fuzzy!  Not only does today mark the first day of spring, but it’s also “The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day”!  You remember Eric Carle’s book about the insatiable caterpillar, don’t you?  Well the beloved larva turns 40 this year, and Eric turns 80!  Fittingly, the vernal equinox has been chosen as a day to celebrate our metamorphosing mate’s big birthday–a time to look back with fond memories on the escapades of our voracious childhood friend and introduce him to yet another generation.  Libraries, schools, and bookstores around the world will be holding events today, throughout the weekend and over the next year in honor of the green wonder and his creator.

Places to start:

a very sweet vid of Eric talking about the book

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (aka The Carle) where you can find events, ideas and an ongoing exhibition.  I highly recommend visiting The Carle if you’re anywhere near Western Massachusetts.  It’s a wonderful museum with a kind, knowledgable superhuman staff!

you can even deck yourself out in Eric Carle designed fabrics purchased through the museum store!  all merch 10% off today only!

some info and a list of upcoming events on Eric’s official website

Google even has an Eric designed logo today!

Happy Caterpillar Day!

I’ve had a seven day flu which has wiped me out. I’m still reeling , but I dragged my self down into the dungeon where I keep my press and pulled this. There’s a set up for you. The turps really help me breathe, its better than nasal spray. Another in a series of male nudes.

Some Good Art, And Some Not So Good Art

Steph’s post on The Museum of Bad Art reminded me that I have been meaning to share some of my own bad art collection here. Now don’t get me wrong, I own lots of good art too, but there is something about a really bad painting that I just find really hard to let pass by so I have devoted what little wall space I have in my studio to create my own museum of bad art.

But before we go there let me soften your eyes up a bit with something nice. My friend Ross Fletcher has been making some collages for a series he calls “Rules of Attraction”, and you can see the whole set along with his paintings on his Flickr page.

This one comes from the New York Times, via my daily Boing Boing perusal. Is Detroit the next big artist’s colony? With houses being sold for as little as 100 dollars, it might just be.

I Wonder If I Can Get In Trouble For This

I don’t know if this has been modified enough to meet the standard of fair use, but I couldn’t resist the lure of a Dumas painting with a wig and desperate need for some Visine.

The Levins

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. At this time of year, like most people, I like to drink myself green in tribute to an Irish Pied-Piper rip off. Towartds that end, here’s a piece that deals with green. As it turns out, green and orange are closely linked in my mind.

This is the second wedding gift I had to make last autumn. This time for Aaron and Sarah Levin. Like the last wedding gift, I stuck to forms I already understand well and tried to focus more on color relationships. They actually hung it differently, maybe even upside down. But I think I told them to hang it as they wanted.

Let the Rabbits Wear Glasses? No!

Posted in "But Is It Art?", animation, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , , on March 16, 2009 by ssstephg

I’m a big believer in the importance of color theory as applied to diet.  If dinner includes something from both the red and green sides of the color wheel, I feel I’m doing alright.  Lately, I’m all about getting my red from the delicious, snappy, sweet carrot.  I’ve been buying 5 lb. bags of organic carrots when I’m able to find not too rubbery ones at the supermarket.  Of course, nothing beats absolutely fresh produce straight from the ground, but Stop & Shop will do until farm share season starts again.  After a particularly divine dinner of carrots, squash and beans this evening, I found myself daydreaming about the possibilities of the fine orange root.  I hit google and was surprised to find a World Carrot Museum online.  What a gem!  They feature carrot recipes, history, trivia, musical instruments and even a section of carrots in fine art.

I also found this fun animated vid posted by sweetspuds on youtube that uses the “Let the rabbits wear glasses!” intro from the song “Disgustipated” by Tool. The volume is a little low, but if you turn it up enough, it’s funny.

easy reasoning

Easy Reasoning, digitally altered paper collage, 10 1/2 x 17 3/4 in. , 2009

I like the way this piece turned out.  I went down the crossdresser road on a whim and I probably won’t make it a reoccuring theme, but it is what it is.  I was really happy with the way the background turned out.  It was kind of an experiment in its self, one that I will have to try again.
