This Saturday, April 4th is the opening for a group show of monotypes curated by the
Monotype Guild Of New England , an organization dedicated to the unique print, of which I have been a member for a few years. The guild boasts some very dedicated and talented printmakers. The show, Endless Possibilities , is at Lynn Arts, in Lynn, Massachussetts, and is one of several events being held throughout the Boston area in conjunction with the North American Print Biennial. So if anyone is in the neighborhood over the next month and likes free alcoholic grape drink and soft cheese-foods, check it out.

Paint Covers All Blight

Posted in Art, news, Painting on March 31, 2009 by jdhastings

The townspeople of Perris, California were recently inpired by some of our favorite infomericals and have decided to spray paint dead lawns green in order to beautify their neighborhoods and promote the sale of abandoned houses.

Apparently this ends up costing 550$ per lawn. That sounds like a lot to me. If you’re going to spend that much money, why not go all the way? Paint a fake swimming pool, and attractive fake neighbors with fake kids for yours to play with. Maybe paint a great fake school right down the street and lucrative paying fake jobs for buyers to apply for?

Ask me if I’m surprised that Perris is in Riverside County. Go on, ask.

HAPPY ARTS ADVOCACY DAY!

Posted in Art, news with tags , , , , on March 31, 2009 by jdhastings

Didn’t know that March 30-31st are Arts Advocacy Day(s)? Then I suppose that makes you like 99% of the world. I am an artist and help run a blog about art, and I had never heard of it, and this is apparently it’s 22nd year in effect. I’ll leave it to you whether that says more about me or Art Advocacy Day. I’ll also leave it to you to read into the fact that they placed this event so close to April Fools Day.

Regardless of it’s obscurity, this special day at least doesn’t lack an impactful spokesperson, with none other than Linda Ronstadt on board to help sell the virtues of a strong art infrastructure to society.

In honor of this glorious event, your Arts Advocacy Day present is below the jump.

Urban Art Awakening

Posted in openings with tags , , , , , on March 31, 2009 by Jason Gray

I was recently included in this event at the Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Art Gallery in St. Louis. I have no idea who else is showing, but it was juried by Kate Poss of Art St. Louis and Washington University, so I expect that it should be interesting. I won’t actually be in attendance for the opening, but I am thinking about sending my brother down there to stand in. If anyone makes it there, please let me know how it went.

Archives: Holes

Posted in abstract, Art, J. D. Hastings, Painting with tags , , , , , on March 31, 2009 by jdhastings

These are from 2006. One night, while walking the 5 feet from my desk to bed, I wondered what it would look like if I used safety-pins to pull open holes in the surface of my paintings. I thought the idea was hilarious, to have the focus of a piece be a void, so I ran with it.

Why I’m Writing Off My Copy of Kill Zone 2* As A Business Expense

Posted in Art, news with tags , , , on March 30, 2009 by jdhastings

Because it is an invaluable and irreplaceable tool to strengthen my eyes. And if the game is a business expense then surely so are the large plasma tv and the chair with built in surround sound speakers, right?

Good news, everybody!

Recent mathematical analysis has all but discounted the possibility of secret vampire cabals infiltrating society without general human knowledge. So you can finally retire your garlic necklaces and turn off the UV lamps surrounding your Louisiana Estate. It’s a new day.

Now all we have to worry about are economic distaster, global warming, nuclear proliferation, ebola and werewolves. To say nothing of robots.

Edward Weston’s Abstract Eye

Edward Weston is one of my favorite photographers. His ability to reveal a heightened sense of design in the natural world is un-paralleled. His work speaks a singular language. Here is an entertaining and informative commentary on Weston’s west coast work by his grandson, Kim Weston.

Primitive Mythology

Primitive Mythology, digitally altered paper collage, 10 1/2 x 14 in., 2009

This is an old collage that I reworked on the computer.  Even though it includes a little text its not part of my planned series of word-art pieces. I also changed the title of the piece. Its in reference to something I heard Deepak Chopra say on Nightline last week.  I thought it was amusing, but hope its not too offensive to anyone.

The hand is from a photo of my own hand after I nearly cut off my finger whilst de-pitting an avacado.

O.k., so I’m posting late this week….In all earnestness, this is not going to be much of a post at all.  I spent this last weekend in St. Louis, which is to be my new home, come May 1st.  From all perspectives, this will be a good move, as it will allow my wife and I to save money, revolve around a smaller nucleus, have more space, do more things, etc.

Nonetheless, this post is centered around the photographs that I took while doing other things, this weekend.  It is image heavy, so be forewarned… Read more »

But Is It Art?

As usual I have no idea how to answer that, but by the end of page one I am pretty sure whatever it is I like it. “March 19″ on page two particularly captures my fancy.

I Wonder If He Threw A Tennis Racket?

John McEnroe got caught up in this high end art scam, along with a number of other people and lost about 2 million dollars.

eheheheheh

Remember this post about the fabulous Smith College bathrooms?  and that time I mentioned the cute bathrooms at The Carle and supplied a link to pics?  Well it appears I’m not the only one with a peculiar fascination for arty water closets.

I present without further ado, The Art Museum Toilet Museum Of Art.  Now doesn’t that name just stumble awkwardly off the tongue and then take a minute to digest?  Regardless, they’ve accrued quite an impressive collection of art museum toilet photos.  Aaayunnnd they’re looking for more.  They’ve already got shots of the Smith College commode d’arte, but I didn’t see any from The Carle.  Perhaps I should submit something.

Funny, sad “Guest of Cindy Sherman”

Posted in Art, current events, film, performance, Photography, Tom Bennett with tags , , , , , on March 28, 2009 by Tom Bennett

We went to see the documentary,“Guest of Cindy Sherman” , last night in Greenwich Village and it left me with mixed feelings. Very entertaining and maybe a little too long, it paints a great, bitter picture of the overblown downtown art scene, the biggest joke being the bloated Julian Schnabel’s performance. I’d recommend seeing it if and when it comes to your neck of the hemisphere.

Yet Another Copyright Battle

Posted in Art, Stephanie Gerolimatos with tags , , , on March 28, 2009 by ssstephg

D’Arte Board friend Charles sent a link to this January 29th article from The Wall Street Journal.  The work of renowned appropriationist Richard Prince is the  subject of yet another copyright court battle.  At issue are a group of  Prince’s works which were shown at Gagosian last fall.  Prince scanned a number of  images from French photographer Patrick Cariou‘s book “Yes Rasta”, printed the images onto canvas and then made minor alterations.

Good grief.  What ever happened to asking if your playmate Read more »

Let’s Go To The Movies

Posted in Art, film, Toni Tiller with tags , , , , on March 27, 2009 by Toni Tiller

Back when I was doing self portraits I got compared to Cindy Sherman about 8 million times, which was initially frustrating because I had no idea who she was, but I suppose later flattering because when I saw her work I really liked it. Anyway, there is a movie about her playing at Cinema Village in NYC opening today and I want to go see it, so if any New York d’Arte Board readers wanna go with me then hit me up.
