LeWitt @ Mass MoCA

Have you seen the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawing Retrospective at Mass MoCA yet? If not, you’d better hurry! It’s only up for another 25 years! HOO! HAH! You read right–25 years! That time frame seems more than reasonable to me considering that, A. number one, it took over 60 people about six months of labor to install the exhibit, and even more importantly it’s an enormously fun, unforgettable humdinger of a show! ayep.

I could spend some time here describing how impressive it is being in the space and feeling as if you’re walking through a giant art maze, or talking up the spectacularly planned and executed three-floor installation, but frankly, I don’t feel like it. So instead, all I’m going to do is offer an enthusiastic two thumbs up and urge you to make space on your quarter century calendar to squeeze in a Mass MoCA visit. Shift things around if you must.

*Interesting Fact
Some of the works in the exhibit are dated posthumously because they are on display for the first time and LeWitt considered his wall works unfinished until they were installed. (LeWitt passed away in ’07.)

  1. I WAS WITH Stephg and i can ATTEST that this show rocked my panties! yes i would have dodges planes on a runway to get to this show. in fact, that’s EXACTLY what we DID!

really though i was much more into this show than i thought i would be. but then i never really tok the time to figure out who Sol Lewitt was or what was the nature of his work. one might think it a risk on the part of MASS MoCA to devote such an amout of space and resources to one artist for 25 years, but i think the show will continue to draw increasing numbers of visitors for the duration. like the grand canyon. or the corn palace. but waaaay better!

btw, thats me in the first pic. please do not throw d’artes.

  2. His was the tude of concept over process. Execution was not his thing. I may never come to terms with how I feel about that.

    • there was a point when much conceptual art left me feeling flat. that gradually changed. these days i’m happy to fill my plate with all manner of art. i have a huge appetite and i get sick of eating the same stuff over and over. or maybe i’m just fickle. actually, being more of a process oriented person, i’ve had to struggle through the dilemma of accepting the opposite as ok, and now i find it more than ok–now it’s interesting to me… it feels sort of like looking at an equation from both sides.
at the exhibit, there were a few spaces where the drawing instructions were written on the wall. the instructions themselves were so complex and circuitous i couldn’t stop giggling. i included a couple of photos of that in the photobucket album i linked.

  3. I got into a terrible argument with Ruth Pettigrew over Sol LeWitt when I was a tyke in college. I think she won. Ruth Pettigrew, wherever you are: I was wrong. You were right. I’m sorry! It’s taken me 25 years to admit it.
Please forgive me! Now, can we conceive, raise and send a child to college before his show is over? (I’m sure she’s past child bearing age by now.)

Markie B looks so much like Chuck Wodiuk it’s scary. (You would be appalled to have a doppleganger who is a irresponsible owner of miniature horses, and incapable of letting even the smallest opportunity for a pun on wordplay pass.)

  4. i wanna see this, but my car won’t make the trip, batsy you might have to drive. i’ll pay for the gas and the therapy.

  5. Its up until 2033, Toni. By then we can take the TVG train at 800 miles an hour and get there in 15 minutes. For now, I’m two blocks away from MOMA, where Sol baby has an installation. This may be a tad easier for me.

    lazy.

  7. i like puns. and i have miniature horses. well, ok, they’re cats, but, i let little people ride them.

  8. Mark, I doubt you could ever be as annoying as Chuck Wodiuk. He’s on a superfund list for toxic pun clean up. Someday I will work up the gumption to go take a picture and post it. (I used to work with him. One summer is all I could take. He knows it too.) His older brother Dave has the same likeness, but he’s not anywhere near as consumed by extremely lame puns. Don’t get me wrong. The guy is a decent man, mostly, and is likeable. But for some reason seeing someone with the same likeness there’s a part of my brain that goes: “Oh no…He’s everywhere!” It similar to Commisioner Dreyfuss seeing Inspector Clouseau.

  9. That pic of Mark is awesome!

  10. [...] don’t want to mislead you. Last weekend’s visit to Mass MoCA was not all about LeWitt, although LeWitt is certainly enough of a reason to make the [...]
