Art Contest! DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 25
We thought we would try something new.
We post a theme, you have a month to make something, or submit something old if it fits the theme, then the d’Arte Board crew will select a winner. The winners piece will be featured on the front page of the blog along with your website and blog.
Our first one will be: “21st Century Depression.”
Depression is a word with many meanings so interpret that any way you like, submit as many times as you like, any work, representational or non-rep. Email your submissions to us at darteboard@gmail.com by February 25th, and we will post the results on February 28th. If it goes well, we will post the next theme then too.
If you are a member of The World Artists Network on Myspace, you can also post entries there.
We look forward to seeing what comes in!

Soup lines are a lasting image of the 20th century depression. Medium isn’t really an issue, so maybe you could do something with your curtrent ouevre…

Can it be photography, a la Dorothea Lange? My mother and father qualify with the county by low income, so they go to the food bank and pick up their quota of commodities. You know, two year old cans of pork, and such. I suppose I qualify too, I have just never bothered to try. Plus, I’m often more busy looking for work.
Thirty miles from me in my hometown it’s always been in a sort of depression. My father’s brag is that it is recession proof that way. It hasn’t grow like the rest of the state, so there’s no shock when everybody all around is collapsing. I’m seeing more places get boarded up slowly. No signs of deflation yet. No signs of shovel ready projects getting going. I sometimes have work for a slumlord converting deserted foreclosure homes into rentals.
My idea of Depression Era artwork probably settles upon Raphael Sawyer’s paintings. I don’t know it translates to 21stCentury yet. I suppose it’s something like a kid trading in his X-box game for some cash for his folks, or seeing an I-pod in a thrift store. There were aerial pictures in the paper of a Vestas plant springing up. I got the impression it seemed like a Crocus amidst this post-industrial town by the size of the photography it took up. Also feeling too late.
I will see what I can do.

Will you be posting the entries somewhere so we can see all of them – like on Flickr? You are going to get some very interesting works using this theme and I would like to see them all, not just the winners.

you know granny you were reading my mind. we had discussed how we were going to handle all of this and i think getting a flickr account and folder might just fit the bill. i’ll throw it out there for the other authors to discuss.
thanks for bringing it up, and hopefully we’ll see you posting something as well.

Way cool. I dig it. I like the fact that the topic is bold. 21st Century Depression? ….read into it or interpret as you like… YES! How’s it going Toni? I’d love you to see some of my newer work and would like to take an active role in this forum. The idea of Flickr is a good one. Will it be open call judging concerning submissions, or?
Kick arse!

here is a link to my art blog I have a few things that come from this depression. The laws are more strict against the poor man than the rich man. The harder times get the greater the police presence. This all brings us back to the origin of the police or..Patties….. they are here to keep the poor in line and baby the well paid.
