In With The New
And now everybody get on the Hope Train! Here we’re looking at the art looking forward to the Obama administration.

“Obama Plush” by Bisbee Stitches
To me this is the perfect place to start because America does have a particularly warm and fuzzy feeling towards President Obama, like he’s simultaneously our security blanket and teddy bear (so named after Theodore Roosevelt). With everything coming apart at the hinges, I hope it’s all justified, but for today I’m satisfied to bask in the plush goodness.

Obviously I could fill this post with nothing but various “Hope” posters or all the variations that Shepard Fairey has come up with, but I’m hoping we can find some different takes by people. I’m even a little excited just to find some run of the mill portraits by everyday people, just trying to express their enthusiasm. We’ll see how things play out.

Barack Obama: An American Portrait Experimental mosaic portrait of Senator Barack Obama made out of American State flags, 2008, Charis Tsevis
This is a great link to a Washington Post article about an art show with Obama as the theme.

“Michelle and Sasha Obama Listening to Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention August 2008″ by Elizabeth Peyton

“Obama Finger Puppet” by Abbey Christine.

“The Politics of Fear” by Barry Blitt.

“out of many we are one”, 6×6″, mixed media canvas, Nayski

“Expectarisons” by Daniel Allyn Lee
This might best be filed under “But is it art?” but what the heck, I saw it in the train station on my way home and couldnt resist the opportunity to take a snap. “Black and White Cookie” by Zabars.

I think this one kind of explains itself.

Obama has truely inspired many artists, including myself. His children are an even bigger inspiration. They are young African-American girls and they make great models for other young children. Finally, someone to relate to.

You know the weird thing about being president? You work from home, but you still have to wear a suit to the office every day. What a rip off. If I was rpesident I’d wear boxers and a t shirt and wouldn’t even shower unless I had to go outside for something. In fact most days I’d probably just telecommute from my bedroom.

I was thinking the exact same thing today about working from home. I mean… the leader of the free world can work from home. If all you do is push paperwork all day… why drive 30 miles to do that? The concept indeed seems dated.

I had nothing to submit of my own, but a ceramic wall installation of Richard Notkin’s seemed to have captured seething anger and disgust in a mosaic-like, composite portrait of #43. I guess I should have linked to it.
It almost transcended his personal aspect through it, definitely throwing into the viewer’s face humanity’s incredible waste and ease at war, the capacity for destruction more at a whim. I thought though, rarely does art bring across a well-crafted viceral statement regarding politics or political figures. Picasso’s “Guernica” comes to mind as one of those.

Okay, I realize my mistake…too late
I posted the above in the wrong place.
Editor: That whole bit can go to “Out With the Old”.
I still haven’t figured out how to link directly to photos other than my own or I’d show them instead.
